Where he comes from, there were these dragons, called scraad after the sounds they made. They were sandy-coloured and deformed, flightless. They killed and ate anything they could find in the desert and feuded with Zaan'y family. When Zaany was cursed, he became one of the scraad on top of his other troubles.
I really want to illustrate the fall of their family. I've got it written up already. xD
