Cages are such a metaphor, though its power has dwindled due to overuse. "My heart is a cage" - "I live in a cage" - I am too comfortable here,because they feed me pellets and water and love in brief spurts. I am not used to relying on myself. I am not used to spreading feathers and wings - another metaphor - and tossing myself into air and wind, enveloped in dancing.
My self loathing has lessened somewhat, at least. Dying is frightening now, and so is this entrapment."
