the jewel theif of animalia, Derrum Yusly, has escaped from prision through an EUP (experimental universal portal) to another universe and runs into eggman.
Eggman: I can get you home if you find me all of the Chaos Emeralds and destroy Sonic or anyone else that gets in your way!!
Eggman has emplanted a special tracking device in Derrum's eyes so that they change colors anytime an emerald is near and has also given him an ability called Chao Dominion giving him complete "Chaos Control" powers even when he has a fake Emerald in his possen.
