Otherkin Essay - Party Three
Otakukin and Mediakin are a highly controversial group. Opinions vary as to whether or not they’re truly Otherkin or a completely separate phenomenon. These are people who identify with characters and species from various media, such as anime and manga, movies, books, or video games. Many say that these are merely today’s version of mythological species, while those of the past were their version of Pop Culture (Lupa 24-26).
Otherkin, as a spiritual belief system, is creating its own mark on society through an ever-broadening internet community. Through an examination of quantum physics, field theory or string theory, we can find an explanation for the possibility of Otherkin.
Quantum physics states that all matter is energy. Because everything is energy, the energy of our thoughts is creative. Therefore, if a group of people agree that something exists, it does. Quantum physics states that our belief systems are creative, or that we create our own reality. (What the Bleep Do We Know, movie)
String theory states there is more than one dimension or world that exists parallel to our own. These different planes host a variety of creatures and beings that may remain strange to us or unseen. Delving further, it continues to say that these planes are on a lower vibration than humans can sense. However, at different points in time, these realms might cross over onto our own and make themselves known.
A variation of string theory states that, rather than being different planes, all are part of one world. We cannot see these variations (strings) as they vibrate at the same frequency. (Wikipedia, pg. 1) Each of these strings has their own unique twist to them. For instance, while in this string Hitler was defeated and the Nazi party taken out of power, in another version (or string) of our world, Hitler may have won World War II and we would currently be under Nazi rule. Therefore, while Hitler may have gained power and taken control of the world as we know it, the same mythological species that few believe exist could easily be roaming the lands and taking part of everyday life. As for the species we consider ‘normal’, such as the antelope or domestic canine, they would possibly be considered that worlds form of a fantasy creature. They would be their unusual and impossible creations.
