Otherkin Identity


Otherkin is a spiritual subculture (Lupa 23). Proof of the possibility of Otherkin can be found in quantum physics, field theory, and string theory. Unfortunately, teens who identify with Otherkin find themselves exiled and isolated in their school environment. It is hoped that increased awareness about Otherkin can lead to a greater acceptance in the school setting and society at large.

As with religion, there is wide variation of Otherkin types. As stated by Lupa, there are the Elves and Fey, Therianthropes, mythological animals, vampires and Angelkin, Demonkin, Kitsune, Otakukin/Mediakin, and lastly Multiples/Walk-ins. Elves generally tend to see themselves as a separate group from the Fey or Faerie beings, while others consider them a part of it.

Fey refer to beings ranging from pixies to orcs to trolls. Many see themselves as resembling “Euro-centric mythos, particularly Celtic, Norse, or Germanic folklore, or modern derivatives such as Tolkein” (Lupa 24, pp.1). However, what information they
have written of their past life memories is held secret, and shared only by their own circles.

Therianthropes are people who identify as literal Earth-based animals in most respects. They tend to be represented by large, powerful, and strong mammals, such as big cats, wolves, and horses. There are also those who fall under slightly smaller headings, like the kiwi, rabbit, and petite insects. However, most Therians shy away from the Otherkin heading, finding it either too incredible to believe or feeling that Otherkin are lost in fantasy (Lupa, 24).
