Not Another- 4

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod…

The same thing ran through Pae’s head at rapid fire. All she remembered was turning to find the old lady gone and a shape barreling towards her.

Personally, she never, ever thought she’d have the guts to drop someone like that. Well, it wasn’t in cold blood, her mind muttered, it wasn’t like he couldn’t defend himself.

Okay, fine. But attacking from the back was pretty cowardly. But it got the job done, her conscious whispered smugly.

Now, adrenaline filling her veins still and a person depending on her to keep her safe, Pae felt like she was about to barf.

After a while, she made it to a brick house. She turned to face the girl. “Listen. You are a friend spending the night because your parents are on vacation for a bit.” TO her surprise, the girl snorted and glared at her.

“First I think we should start off with names first. I mean, don’t you think it would be a bit suspicious if two friends don’t even know each other’s name?” She snarled.

“Whoa…” Pae said holding up her hands. “Good idea but I think we should talk first.”

“Oh really…” The other said with a roll of her eyes. She was still shaking a bit.

“I’m Pae. Well, everyone calls me that. My full name is Palina Alicia Elden. What’s yours?”

“Will.” The girl replied simply and quickly.

Pae was growing irritated. “I save the whore’s life and she turns out to be not as grateful as one should be.”

“What did you just say?” Will snarled, her head whipping around and her eyes narrowing. “Did you just call me a whore?”

Pae glared back. “You sure deserve it with the way you’re acting.”

“Listen!” Will yelled. “If you want to know why that guy attacked me; wanted to kill me for something I did, then you’re out of luck! In fact, I want to know why YOU were able to float ten feet off the ground in front of me! Can you tell me that one?”

“First of all!” Pae began in her deathly quiet voice with a touch of snarl to it, “That guy was probably drunk and didn’t even know his own name, much less what the hell he was doing. Second of all, what are you smoking?”

The other girl looked taken aback for a moment. “Wha?”

“A human can’t float. And if I did float, why wouldn’t I remember it?”

A step behind them alerted them to another human being. Turning, Pae saw a man in a funky hat…a conductor’s hat in a uniform. The street was foggy and they could barely make out what he looked like. The fog was thick. Pae looked around…she couldn’t even see the buildings.

“How did that happen so fast?” She muttered.

“Who is that guy?” Will asked. They both turned to face him. “Hello?” Will called, her voice having a little quake to it.

“Hello ladies. If you survive The Crazy Train you have my blessing.” The conductor man spoke.

“You’ve got to be kidding…” Pae said quietly, her mind barely unable to take in his words. “Fog doesn’t roll in so quickly. What train? Why the hell has my Summer vacation decided to do this to me?”

A loud whirling thickened the air and the sound of metal scraping against metal joined it. Then a horn. A blast so loud, Pae and Will ducked and covered their ears. The all too familiar CHOO CHOO. A shape came out of the fog; a huge, hulking shape.

“Nonono.” Pae said once more. “My parents are going to kill me if they find out I’ve snuck out again.”

“This, I don’t think, counts as sneaking out…” Will interjected, tone laced with sarcasm and awe.

For what stopped in front of them was not quite a train. It had the body of a train, the front was a train, but the middle…only poles stood from ceiling to ground. No seats, no railing. There was just a floor, a ceiling, and those poles.

“I never thought I would be spending my vacation this way,” Will said taking a step forward as the conductor swung himself onto the train.

“All aboard girls.”

“Should we?” Will asked.

“Why are you asking me?”

“Because I was the one who ran from the killer psycho…you were the one that beamed him over the side of the head.”

“Of course.” Pae looked at the train. “With all that’s happened in what? An hour? I think that the “Nothing lost, nothing gained” principal applies here.” She jumped up onto the train, cursing ferverently that this adventuring would not lead to groundations and a private boot camp/juvie detention center. She turned to help Will up.

“I was hoping to spend my Summer in Seattle,” Will confided.

“And I was hoping I would spend it doing something leaning towards calming and relaxing.” Pae said. Will nodded in agreement.

The conductor spun around to face them. “The rules are simple. One person to a pole. Only hang on my your hands. And if you leave the train, it’s certain death.”

“Oh, yeah, knew that one was coming.” Will muttered.

Pae looked behind them, only to find she couldn’t see five feet away because of the fog. She swallowed. The conductor played with some buttons and the train gave a high whistle, and started forward. Although it would be unfair to say it started forward exactly. It started to go up, like a roller costar.

“I hate roller costars,” Will whined.

“You know, I love ‘em. When I’m strapped in and thing has all the proper safety regulations met.”

The conductor heard her and turned around, eyes gleaming, mouth grinning. He chuckled. “You’re gonna hate this ride little girl. I bet the first loop we hit your friend there loses it.”

“There are loops…” Will said and her voice was full of nausea.

“I bet you like guys, don’t’cha?” Pae snarled at him.

“Yeah! I do!” He laughed a crazy laugh. “Next stop: Notherworld!”
