Not Another- 1

Will sat staring at the clock. Three twenty nine and fifty eight seconds… Three twenty nine and fifty nine seconds… Three thirty! Every kid jumped from their seats, all practically running from the room and none listening to the teacher’s yelled “Have a fun summer”. Yes, summer was finally here. The time when there was no home work to worry about, only carefree days ahead. Will smiled to herself. She already had the whole summer planned…

She slammed her empty locker closed with more force than necessary while chatting with be neighbor discussing what they planned to do. “Yeah,” Will said leaning against her locker. “I’m going to head down to Seattle to spend the summer with my dad. It’s going to be great.”

“But Will, I thought your mom said you couldn’t go…” Said a girl from beside her. Will frowned.

“I’m sixteen, Nancy. Like hell I’m going to let my mother decide whether or not I can go spend the summer with my dad.” Will said rolling her eyes. She pushed away from her locker and started walking down the hall, Nancy and two other girls following. “Besides, once she finds out I already have a plane ticket, she won’t be able to refuse.” The three girls gasped.

“Will, you didn’t!” “Why?” “Where’d you get the money?” They all blurted out at once. They paused and stared at each other a moment, then the one named Nancy spoke. “What if your dad don’t want’cha down there, Will. What will you do then?” She asked, both her voice and her eyes laced with concern.

Will rounded on her. “Of course he wants me!” She growled looking at them. Seeing that they all were thinking the same thing, she turned on her heel and stormed away. Muttering, “Whatever…” She could hear them running to catch up, she ran faster, ignoring both their calling of her name and a teachers complaints of running. The first exit she came to she threw open the doors and ran out. Forget the bus, she needed to be alone.

Sitting alone in her own world always seemed to help with her problems. Maybe because in your own world, things happen how you want them. Will sighed and laid back staring up at the statue of a nude angel. The wings obscuring the more interesting parts. The cemetery, a place of grieving, a place of peace. The only place she could ever find peace. Will frowned at the angel’s blank stare. “Is it really my fault that no one understands me?” She asked him, not expecting an answer. She shrugged and stood up walking away from the angel. She turned, producing a camera from her book bag. She snapped a couple picture of him and smiled.

“So I can see you even when I’m in Seattle.” Will explained. She replaced the camera to her bag. “I have to get going. Don’t want to be walking around after dark. Never know who’s out there, right? I’ll stop by before I leave. Later.” She waved as she turned, and began to run. It wasn’t that she was afraid of the dark. But New York City at night? Like she said, you never who might be lurking around.

The sun was setting faster then Will would have liked. She was still ten miles away from home. And with no money for a bus fare, she was sure to get an ear full once she did manage to get home.

With the last few weak rays, the sun slid down behind the buildings. She growled in frustration trying to decide between taking the long way which included brightly lit streets, or the short but through a dark park way… Will snorted and started towards the park, as if something was going to happen to her, that’s stuff only happens in movies.

Even in the day, this was a park most avoided. It was unkempt and litter filled. Whatever street lights there were, they didn’t work. Will shuttered and shuffled her book bag around on her shoulder. Almost there. She could see the lights from the next street over… A cat shrieked from somewhere in the dark. Will jumped and spun around.

A person stood still as a statue behind her. And if she hadn’t just walked there moments ago, she might have believed that’s all it was. But it wasn’t. In what light there was, Will could make out that it was a man, and he was slowly making his way towards her….
