Fox Tales chapter 3

Tenke looked at the phone, he shrugged, leaving it there, he went into the kitchen. “What the fuck does he know?” he asked himself, “Damn” he said and began cooking dinner for the two. Cooking was a way Tenke got calmed down from anything. He pulled out some ground beef. Starting that first, he started to chop it up and flatten it out into hamburgers. Tenke was finished with dinner, it had taken him an hour, and Ishtaar hadn’t come back home yet. He went to the window and looked out it, it was almost pitch black out side, and he knew the wolf could handle himself, even at night. He was worried though, putting the plate of burgers into the microwave to keep them warm, he headed out side after pulling on a light jacket.
Tenke wandered around, asking everyone if they’d seen him, one pointed toward the far edge of town. “Why would he go there?” he asked himself and went there anyway. That side of town was dangerous, and he shook, praying that his best friend was alright. He asked around when he got to that neighborhood. They had all said that they hadn’t seen him. He looked everywhere, even in spots he knew the wolf would never go. He soon found the ground was wet, and it smelled horrible, his heart dropping at the thought of what it could be. He had looked around the area, even yelled Ishtaar’s name. He eventually got an answer. “Tenke” he knew the voice, it was the wolf, but when he found him he saw that blood had darkened his fur, and clothes. He ran to him and dropped to his knees and grabbed Ishtaar gently, seeing nothing.
“What the hell happened?” he asked, hi heart raced.
“I just… its ok,” he said, seeing the worry in Tenke’s face. His breath was raspy, and like he had hard time breathing. “I just...he...got caught off guard” he said smiling.
“We need to go, you need a doctor.” he said, picking him up like a baby and began to almost run out of that part of the town. When he could see with the lights of the streets he saw that it was getting bad quickly. He pulled Ishtaar close to him and started to run faster.
They got to the hospital after what felt like an eternity, Tenke was panting heavily, he talked to the receptionist, who had Doctors come immediately after seeing the extensively large amount of blood, now on both the canids. Tenke shook badly, following the doctors and his friend. A hand grabbed his shoulder softly; he looked up and saw the nurse that had come with them. She shook her head no and then let go, following the others.

Tenke looked down at the ground moving his hands, seeing how much blood was on them, his eyes began to fill up with tears again. He walked out to the waiting room, wanting to be as close to Ishtaar as he could be. He sat down; he placed his hands between his legs and squeezed his hands between them. A doctor that was off duty had seen him. She touched his shoulder gently. “You ok?” she asked. “Come with me” she said, seeing the blood on his hands and shirt the nurse was a small leopard, she was surprisingly smaller then Tenke.
He got up and followed her. They went into a small unoccupied room; she put on gloves and filled a bowl with warm water. “What happened anyway?” she asked him.
“It wasn’t me, it was my friend” she picked up his arm and began to clean of the blood. “I don’t know what happened to him. He said and watched her clean off his fur. “I…I feel like it’s my fault. No I know it IS my fault” he said and looked down at the floor.
“What makes you say that?” she got done with his arm and moved to the next one.
“Its because of me, I got angry, and he left. He left and after about an hour, he sill hadn’t come back home, so I went looking for him.” He was starting to cry. “I was too late though, he had gone all the way to the other side of town, and I found him there, I couldn’t do anything.” He said taking his free hand and put it against his face, rubbing his eyes. His body was shaking. She finished with his arm, she got down in front of him she lifted his chin.
“Don’t worry, he’ll be ok.” She reassured him and then lifted his shirt; blood went through his coat and shirt. She began to clean him off there too. “You should go home.” She said and gave him back his shirt and coat. “I’ll let them know to call you if anything happens with him.” She smiled and let him out.” He didn’t put the clothes back on, not wanting to have all of the Nurse’s work be for nothing. He nodded and thanked her, walking out of the hospital, he headed back home.

When he was back home, he threw the bloody clothes into a pile and went to his closet. He put on a new shirt and walked out to the living room. He fell onto the couch and curled his legs close to him and started to cry again. He cried until he eventually fell asleep. A dream came to him quickly, he saw himself arguing with Ishtaar. He tried to stop him, but he couldn’t do anything, he had followed the black wolf all the way. He screamed at him, begging him to go back, but Ishtaar continued forward. Ishtaar screamed a second later, everything went black and Tenke struggled in the darkness. Then phone rang, causing Tenke to jump awake. He picked up the phone “hello?” he asked the person.
“Mr. Shiro?” the voice asked, it was a deep sound.
“this is him.” He said and asked “who is this?”
this is Dr. Kiyta from the hospital, could you come here as soon as possible?” he asked.
“What’s wrong, is Ishtaar ok?” he asked quickly.
“just come down here please, I feel like we should talk in person.” He said, “good bye” he said and hung up.

Tenke was shaking as he walked down to the hospital. He saw a big bear standing next to the receptionist’s desk and walked up to him, he saw the name tag he had on, it was gold and had the name ‘Marv Kiyta” carved into it. Tenke said it was him and asked what is wrong.
Dr. Kiyta put his hand on Tenke’s back. “Ishtaar seems to be doing fine,” he said and showed him to Ishtaar’s room. “But, we are going to keep him here to make sure.” He said, opening the door. The fox flattened his ears and walked in to the room; he pulled a chair up and sat next to him.
Ishtaar moved his head over and smiled at him “Hey.” He said. “How’s it going?” he asked petting him.”
“I’m doing fine.” He said smiling, “you?” he asked the black wolf.
“Can’t complain.” He said moving to sit up, having to get help from the red fox.
“Did…what happened anyway?” he asked looking at the wolf.
“I don’t remember, you know that” Ishtaar laughed. “But the doctors said that I was stabbed.” He said moving the ‘robe’ that he had on. There was a deep gash, it wasn’t all that big, but Tenke got closer and saw the stitches that were holding it together. He leaned back, “They said that it wasn’t too bad.” He said, covering it back up.
“Yeah, they’re full of it, I was covered in blood” he said being honest. “I was scared,” he said and started to tear up. “I thought I was going to lose you.” he said and hugged Ishtaar softly.
The wolf looked surprised. But patted Tenke’s back. “I’m not going to leave you.” He said, “I just needed to walk some anger off” he sighed and pet the fox’s ears.
‘I’m sorry for saying what I said, I really am” he was really starting to cry.
“Don’t worry about it, I understand how you feel.” He was trying to comfort Tenke. “But then again, I don’t” he added softly.

Tenke had spent the entire day there, talking and laughing at old stories. Dr. Kiyta came into the room and asked Tenke to leave. The fox shook his head, wanting to stay with Ishtaar. “Please, let me stay…” he said with flat ears. “I promise I won’t do anything bad.” The bear blinked then nodded, walking out of the room. “I hope I didn’t start anything.” He said, and lowered his head. The wolf laughed and petted him.
“It’s ok” he said. A few more minutes had gone by. The doctor came back into the room, a group of wolves followed him, Tenke could you please leave, for now?” he asked, the fox understood what was going on. He nodded and got up, leaving the room, quickly followed by the large bear.

Tenke sighed and looked into the room after Dr. Kiyta left. He smiled, watching Ishtaar’s family hug him. He walked away, and stretched. Tenke was bored, ‘maybe I should go home’ he thought, ‘give Ishtaar some rest.’ He continued, ‘but what if…’ he shook off the thought, not wanting to think about it. He walked up to Dr. Kiyta and told him to tell Ishtaar that’d he’d be at home. He walked out of the door, and walked back to their home.
