Koimonogatari: Chapter 1 [KYOxTOSHIYA]
Kyo’s eyes squinted as he looked up at the sky. The sun was unusually bright that day, and he had forgotten his sunglasses at his house. Disappointed, he searched his pockets to see if he had any change for the subway. No luck. He swore under his breath at how forgetful he was when he heard someone walking up behind him.
“Now, there’s no need for profanity, Kyo-chan.”
Kyo turned around, squinting, as he looked up at the tall man now standing in front of him. His face lit up as he saw that it was his dear friend, Toshiya, smiling back at him.
“Toshii-Chan~!” Kyo half-squealed as he went to hug his friend, but stopped himself and settled for a handshake.
“Forget your wallet again?” The taller man teased, reaching into his pocket. “Where ya headed?”
“Back to my house. I forgot my sunglasses…” Kyo said quietly.
“Mind if I tag along?” He offered.
Kyo smiled at his friend and started walking towards the subway entrance. Toshiya sped up until he was level with the shorter man.
“You sure are fast for a little guy,” Toshiya joked. “You in some kind of hurry?”
Kyo looked up at the tall man and nodded.
“Yeah, of course why wouldn’t I be?” He said with such a big smile that it seemed to infect Toshiya’s brain because he found himself smiling just as big in return. They walked together to the ticket booth as Toshiya took out his wallet.
“Are you sure about this?” Kyo asked the taller man in a guilty voice.
“Of course! You think I’m going to make you walk home?” He said in a sarcastic but somehow serious tone.
The clerk thanked them and they walked to the car.
On the subway train Kyo sat down across from Toshiya, who was crammed between a mother and her screaming baby and an obnoxious old man. Kyo felt sorry for his friend and offered his iPod to him. Toshiya was more than glad to take it.
“Thank you~!” He mouthed, relief apparent on his face.
Kyo nodded and laughed quietly to himself, glad to be between people who were quiet. He leaned back in his seat, trying to relax and drown out the noise of his surroundings, and eventually succeeded. Moments later, he found himself staring at Toshiya. His eyes traced over every curve of his body, working there way up to his face, up to his lips, and then his eyes. Toshiya caught him and made a silly face and smiled. Kyo smiled back in return and closed his eyes. Before he knew it, Toshiya was poking the bridge of his nose, telling him to wake up.
“Hey buddy this is our stop! We’re going to miss it if you don’t get your lazy ass up.” The taller man laughed and helped his friend to his feet.
Kyo rubbed his eyes and followed him out of the car. Luckily, didn’t live far from the subway station. He didn’t feel like walking very much.
“Ne, Kyo-Chan~! Stop lagging! My grandma can walk faster!” Toshiya laughed teasingly at Kyo.
“Don’t laugh at me I just woke up!” Kyo playfully pushed the taller man and eventually caught up.
They arrived at his house and Kyo didn’t even feel like going back out. He plopped himself on the sofa and exhaled that eventually ended in a yawn that took up half his face. Toshiya was still in the doorway. This was his first time over at Kyo’s house.
“Well don’t just stand there all awkward-like. Sit down. Make yourself comfortable.” Kyo said, laughing.
Toshiya took off his shoes and stepped inside and sat down in the nearest chair.
“Funny, I thought your house would be—“
“Darker?” Kyo interrupted.
“Yeah.” Toshiya said smiling.
“Yeah, you would think. I used to have it darker but I found it to be a bit depressing. Like I couldn’t relax, ya know?” Kyo raised an eyebrow as he walked into the kitchen.
Toshiya then nodded in agreement and looked around at all of Kyo’s manga’s and video games. He never realized how much he liked Warumono figurines. They were all over the place. Then Kyo’s bass caught his eye. He rushed over in excitement. It was beautiful. He lightly touched the strings and listened to the low sounds that came from the instrument. It even sounded beautiful.
“Ah, I see you found my bass.” Kyo said, smiling.
Toshiya had nearly jumped out of his skin.
“Don’t sneak up on me like that!” He said clutching his chest.
“Sorry. I thought you’d hear me coming. I’m not exactly the quietest guy in the world,” Kyo said offering his friend a glass of water. “Here, if you want anything else just tell me.”
Kyo sat down on his sofa and turned on his TV. Toshiya set his glass on the coffee table.
“You wouldn’t mind if I took a look at your bass, right?“ Toshiya asked, pointing at the instrument across the room.
“Oh sure, go ahead.” Kyo said smiling.
Toshiya picked up the instrument and sat down in a nearby chair. He closed his eyes and played a calm melody. Rocking back and forth with the music Toshiya started to sing quietly to himself.
“Kimi wo ai shiteru
Zutto ai shiteru
Ima nara sunao ni ieru
‘...Kimi ga suki’
Kimi no massugu na tokoro
Hikareru no wa boku ga hinekurete iru ka na?
Aa, boku wa itsumo ki ga tsukeba
Wagamama bakkari itchatteru ne…”
Kyo wasn’t really even paying attention to what the song was. He was paying more attention to Toshiya’s movements. How his body seemed to flow with the melody, even though it was only bass. Kyo’s eye’s traced from Toshiya’s fingers, up to his wrists, to the muscles in his arms moving under his skin, up to where his shoulder met his neck, up to his face. He bit his lip not knowing that Toshiya had opened his eyes and was now staring at him. Oh crap. I just had to look, didn’t I? Kyo thought to himself.
“You want anything to eat?” Kyo asked his friend. “It’s almost 5:00”
“Wow…Time really goes by doesn’t it?” Toshiya said with a surprised look. “But sure, what are you making?”
Kyo thought for a second, remembering why he had gone out in the first place today, he meant to go to the store. He had to think quickly.
“It’s a surprise, you’ll see.” Kyo said, trying to think of how to make something out of almost nothing.
As Kyo silently panicked in the kitchen, Toshiya started to play again. After a while he found himself watching Kyo cook. He watched how he rushed around his kitchen. How he looked through cupboards and drawers like he didn’t have a clue of what he was doing. Ha-ha…Now I’m the one staring… He thought to himself, laughing. But somehow, he didn’t care. He set the bass guitar back on the stand and walked to the kitchen doorway.
“Need any help Kyo-Chan?” He asked, smiling.
Kyo paused and looked at the tall man smiling at him from the doorway.
“If you want.” He replied.
Toshiya was excited to help. He went to the fridge to see what there was. Not much was there but strawberries and blueberries. He scooped them up into a colander and started washing them. He turned to look at Kyo who was focused on cutting the last of the celery to put into the noodles. Kyo looked up for a moment and smiled. Toshiya smiled back and went back to washing the fruit, making sure he didn’t miss anything.
Moments later, Toshiya found himself moving closer little by little until their shoulders were inches away from touching. He could feel the heat from Kyo’s body on his skin. He turned towards him and his eyes almost automatically met Kyo’s. In that instant, everything that was going through his mind had completely disappeared. He stammered and turned back to the sink moving to the far side of it.
“Something wrong?” Kyo asked, startling his friend.
“Wha—Oh, no. Why do you ask?”
“I dunno... you just seem to be acting a little weird is all,” Kyo said, going back to his cooking. “Is everything ok?”
Toshiya nodded and grabbed a paring knife and started cutting the stems off of the strawberries.
After a while when everything was done Kyo called his friend into the living room.
“Here, sit down and I’ll get the food.” He told Toshiya as he scurried off into the kitchen.
A few moments later a loud ‘pop!’ almost made Toshiya jump out of his skin. He ran into the kitchen to see what had happened.
“Relax, it’s just a champagne bottle.” Kyo said, laughing at his friend.
Kyo gathered the plates and bowls of food until he couldn’t carry anymore, nudged the door to his fridge closed with his foot and walked carefully into the living room.
“Could you get the cups?” Kyo called back to his friend.
Toshiya grabbed both the cups and the bottle and walked into the living room. Kyo had put on a movie for them to watch while they ate.
“You like horror movies, right?” Kyo asked hoping his selection was acceptable.
“Yeah. Come on, now, Kyo. You know me” Toshiya nudged the small man sitting next to him.
It seemed like the second he walked into his house, Toshiya felt like he’d just met Kyo. Like they hadn’t known each other for more than 20 minutes. Yet, they had known each other for years.
Kyo found it funny how Toshiya was so in to the movie. He had watched it so many times before that it didn’t really interest him. So he picked up the dishes from dinner and took them into the kitchen. He peeked around the corner into the living room, finished putting away the dishes, ran and tackled Toshiya.
“Holy shit~!” he screamed as he fell off the sofa.
Now they were both on the floor, Toshiya tackled back. They’re playful pushes led to them rolling around Kyo’s living room, wrestling. Toshiya picked up Kyo and threw him over his shoulder. The force of Kyo being swung around threw Toshiya off balance, resulting in both of them falling to the ground, Kyo on top of the taller man.
Kyo’s heart raced as looked into Toshiya’s intense eyes. Breathing in his cologne, feeling his breath in his face. He started leaning towards Toshiya but he quickly jumped up, and started to talk but stopped himself. An awkward silence followed. Toshiya checked his watch.
“It’s getting late. I should go…” He said, his voice shaking. He quickly grabbed up his belongings and thanked his friend for having him over.
“See you tomorrow...” He said as he grabbed his shoes and bolted out the door.
Toshiya rushed back to his house. When he got inside he slammed the door behind him, kicked his shoes off and melted onto his sofa. He sat there in the dark, thinking about his evening. He couldn’t get Kyo off his mind. The way his eyes lit up when he smiled, how his chest moved up and down as he breathed. Then he thought of how much he wished he hadn’t flipped out and left when Kyo went to kiss him. More thinking made him notice that Kyo was wearing the cologne he gave to him on his birthday. So we don’t have to smell your rank ass after lives. He remembered teasing Kyo. He broke the silence, laughing. He didn’t want to think too much about it so he got a glass of water, washed his face, and went to bed.
