Attraction chapter 2
I opened my eyes slowly and started at the ceiling.
“Saturday,” I whispered, “nothing to do but watch some T.V” after procrastinating getting up for a good twenty minutes I hauled myself out of bed. I walked out of my bed room and into the main area of my small apartment. It wasn’t much, but it was home. For months now I’ve been trying to save up enough money to move out of here and get a real house. So far it wasn’t going to well. I threw on a red bathrobe and walked out my front door to get the newspaper. There, lying at my feet was a crisp white envelope with a bright red wax seal. I glanced around hoping to see the person who left it, but the halls were empty. I lifted the letter off the ground and tore open the flap carelessly.
You’re invited!
You have been chosen to come to Mr. Gates dinner and dance
party. Please dress formally and expect a good time.
I scoffed and was about to crumble the letter when I noticed the P.s. at the bottom.
P.s. Do be sure to wear that lovely new watch of yours.
The letter hit the floor and I backed away into my apartment and shut the door. There was no way the man from last night knew where I lived. He walked in a completely opposite direction. My heart began to pound in my chest. On top of that why on earth was he inviting me to a dinner party? I paced back and forth in my leaving room for a good while before deciding to go pick out a dress. I ended up choosing a classy black one rather than the normal red or gold for this occasion. I found that the black dress looked nicer with my dark skin rather than the red dress.
The party wasn’t going to start till around seven pm so I had a few hours to just let the anticipation kill me. I spent most of my time in the bathroom deciding whether to put my hair up or down. I went with up. Part of me still couldn’t understand why I was agreeing to go to this ‘fancy party’ and why I was spending so much time on how I looked. Blood rushed to my face when I thought of that man again, but I quickly shook the thought away.
“Mr. Gate,” I repeated in my head a few times. The name sounded nice; Sophisticated. The exact opposite of the man I met last night. That guy was a total lunatic.
I headed out the door at 6 pm; earlier then necessary but I was a little anxious. I had already planned out in my head what I was going to say to Mr. Gate. First, it would be a good slap across the face for following me. Second, while he’s still in shock, I’ll mentally destroy him and threaten to call the police if I ever see him again. Thirdly, I’ll have a nice dinner and head back home. I smiled to myself; an aura of confidence surrounding me. There was no way he’d come follow me after the talking I would be giving him.
Once arriving at the party I was blown away by the size of the building.
“He rented out a hotel?” I stammered while parking my car, “there must be a lot of people here,” From the sound of the invitation I thought this would be a small get together, but I was horribly wrong. Cars of every style and class pulled up to the front driveway and elegant men and women stepped out. I stumbled out of my beat up tin can and hurried over to the front entrance. I gripped the silver handle on the front door and pulled it open to reveal a giant dining hall. I felt like a gold fish that was just chucked into an ocean. All eyes in the room fell on me and everyone was silent. I was literally the black sheep of the crowd and they knew it. I wondered into the room cautiously trying to avoid the poisonous looks from the other guests. Then I saw him. At the far back of the hall with a glass of wine in his hand. He was smiling about something but he didn’t look entirely happy; that is until he noticed me. Mr. Gate waved me over and poured another glass of wine. Once the guests saw him beckoning me, they ignored my presence and went back to their talking. I took a deep breath and marched over to him.
“I’m so glad you could make it my dear,” he said suavely while handing me the glass.
“Well I only came so I could tell you off,” I replied while sipping the drink, “I don’t want you following me home,”
“Don’t worry Ria I won’t follow you anymore,”
I froze. How did he know my name? My heart pounded faster and my breathing started to get heavy. I could feel the guests looking at me now; judging me like the stuck up rich fucks they were.
“You’re making a scene Ria,” He whisper as he filled his glass up for the third time, “And it wasn’t hard to find your name,”
I took a few more deep breaths and moved a strand of hair out of my face.
“What might your name be Mr. Gate?” I asked through clenched teeth.
“Nuero,” He replied while refilling my glass which I didn’t plan on finishing, “Nuero Gate,”
“Well Nuero I’ll be taking my leave,” I hissed, “and if I see you again I’ll call the cops,” He rolled his eyes in irritation and downed his glass; whipping his mouth with his arm.
“Do you just want to go up stairs and have some fun?” he said bluntly, “that’s the only reason I invited you here,” My body shook with anger. He only called me here to get laid? What did I look like a whore?
“No,” I spat, “you can go find your fun somewhere else loser,” Nuero sighed deeply and rubbed his eyes with his thumb and pointer finger.
“Please?” he asked again with a little more desperation in his voice, “just for an hour or so,”
“Sorry but you’re not even that attractive,” I lied, “so it’s not going to happen; I don’t go for rich little boys,” The man laughed and gripped my shoulder tightly; pulling me closer to him.
“Could I at least show you around then?” He asked, “Just upstairs,” I eyed him skeptically for a few moments before nodding. He gripped my arm tightly and led me to the grand stair way.
“So how much did it cost to rent out this hotel?” I inquired, “Must have been a lot,”
“Hotel?” he repeated, “this is my house,” he continued up the stairs nonchalantly leaving me on the first step in shock. Not wanting to be left behind with the rest of the guests I followed him up. Nuero showed me many rooms that looked as if they had never been used. There were 28 bedrooms, 20 bathrooms, 2 music rooms, 3 living rooms, and a massive kitchen.
“This much space and you live here by yourself?” I said in awe, “it seems ridiculous,”
“Well I guess it is,” he mumbled, “but its home,” I crossed my arms and watched as he leaned himself over the railing that looked down onto the guests.
“So it’s still a no huh?” he asked while looking back at me through his white hair.
“And it always will be,” I answered. It looked as if he were going to continue the conversation when a young lady made her way over to us.
“Hello Mr. Gate,” the young women said affectionately, “I’ve been looking for you all night so we could dance,” I snorted loudly and it was obvious he noticed.
“Oh of course we can dance sweetie,” He cooed while wrapping one of his arms around her hip, “Miss Ria here was just leaving, right?” My face was getting red. I wasn’t sure if it was from embarrassment, anger, or jealousy.
“Good bye Mr. Gate,” I said coldly while heading down the main stairs, “Have fun with your little plaything,” I felt the slight sting of tears near the corner of my eyes but I cursed them away. How could I have been so stupid as to come here? I should have known he’d only be interested in something as single minded as that. I hurried down the stairs and was just about to get off the last step when the body hit the floor. Everyone, including me, froze and stared at the distorted figure of the young women. I was the first to look up from where the body came from and was not surprised at all to see Nuero leaning over the side; Smiling.
“Poor thing fell,” He said from the second floor, “She must have had too much to drink,” The guests began to whisper some even took out the phones to call the police. I on the other hand was not convinced. I stepped closer to the body and went cold at the site of finger marks around her throat.
“He broke her neck,” I whispered.
“Don’t tell anyone,” He chuckled, he had made his way down the stairs and next to me, “You don’t want me getting in trouble do you?” I could feel him behind me now; his breath hitting the back of my neck. I shivered slightly and turned to look at him.
“Why did you do it?” I asked under my breath. Nuero moved closer to me; his lips practically touching my ear.
“Cause it was funny,”
