Previously, I discussed the issue number box and the significance of the background. No sense in repeating myself, so if you care to know about those, you can look at the image description on the WIP of this piece.

Obviously, being the cover, this was going to be the first look the reading audience had of the turtles. But, the story opens with only brief glimpses at the turtles, and I didn't want to ruin that build up, so I cast all the characters in shadow. In fact, that decision came before the cover's setting, and helped in determining what the background would be. Apart from the shadows, I wanted the turtles to be even more shrouded, hence the broken glass in the foreground.

Quick story on that. I like to think of this cover of being less about the turtles, and more about the short story of the manhole cover that was blown off it's own hole in the opening of the original cartoon. The turtles just happen to be there.

And speaking of coincidences, the fact that the only colors in the cover are derivative of the turtles' bandanna colors? Total accident. Didn't mean to do it, but I'm really happy with the result.
