And here we have the first spell cast in the story. You should pay close attention to how it's done.
First off, there's a visible swirling energy around the caster's hands. Second, their eyes are glowing (It's hard to represent that properly in black and white, but I think Cathy did an excellent job at it). There's also the incantation. Though it may not look like it, there is a significance to each word.
To begin with, incantations are always four words spoken in some unknown tongue. After that is a verbal call to send the spell out.
Of the four words, the first dictates the element of the spell. The second word dictates what plane of existence the caster is drawing energy from. There are seven in total, and the higher the plane, the greater the energy draw is. Of course, going to higher planes empowers the spell more. The third word dictates the actual strength of the spell. The fourth word dictates what the spell will do.
Of course, how these all relate together is something different. I'll explain that in the next page.
