I have long been fascinated with the paleolothic cave paintings of Western Europe. Caves like those at Lascaux, Chauvet Cave, and Altamira. These cave walls were painted by ancient people as long as 32,000 years ago. I have long wanted to create a piece that captured the majesty of these paintings. I have always been disappointed by my attempts to depict these awesome paintings that were massive and created on an irregular cave wall surface, the original painters utilized the natural structures of the cave walls to accentuate the curve of a belly of the bulge of a haunch. They often carved their subject into the wall first then painted over it with substances they had at their disposal such as red and yellow ochre, and charcoal This is very hard to depict and capture in a 2D medium.

Anyways, this is my latest attempt, at depicting these awe inspiring cave paintings. I recently won a sketch book commission from Kyle Lawrence (aka rantingmule, dogsoul, kettensage) and he created a very wonderful piece of Inga on a back drop of cave paintings of Paleolithic horses. It inspired me to try and capture these awesome paintings myself again. (Thanks, Kyle!)

This was done in photoshop, it took over 25 hrs to complete.

I just love the textures! And the reindeer. I'd own a pair if I knew how to keep them in the pasture. Can barely keep my horses in much less a freakin' deer. lol
