There are few media more difficult to work with than colored pencil. It's not that it's physically demanding, aside from the patience required to build up color, but rather it's difficult to come out with a finished product that looks finished, rather than a study. Here, ArtpurplecaT has achieved that goal. The majority of Hmrmrmdmnfsfd is a combination of graphite and ink, in a beautiful structure of values. Then the colored pencil is used sparingly and carefully, in a vivid rainbow that would be spectacular on its own, but is only intensified by contrast with the monochromatic base. After a moment, one notices the faces being formed from the flamelike colors. What might have come across as trite is instead perceived as clever because of that momentary pause. And the execution of all three media is excellent; everything is rendered tightly, allowing the surreal quality of the subject to feel conceivably magical. Brilliant work.
