Chapter 4 'Premonition'
Chapter 4
‘Premonition’
I’m flying over houses, rivers, canyons, lakes, well…everything. I don’t know why or how I’m flying, but I cant shake the feeling I belong here; in the sky. I cant stop thinking how beautiful the world looks from up here; with the warm yellow sun, bright blue sky filled with fluffy white clouds, and the colorful ground below me. Also I’m thinking how terrified I should be right now. Normally I am afraid of highs, but now I feel…free.
All of the sudden everything is getting darker; the sky is becoming filled with thunder black clouds, the earth seems gray and lifeless, even my thoughts darken like all the happiness in the world vanished. I start to hear countless voices screaming out in terror inside my head. I cant understand what the voices are screaming but their getting louder and louder. Then my ears single out two voices that sound like my brother and father yelling my name. I try to fight the sounds by covering my ears and trying to fly away. But now I’m hurtling towards the earth. Faster and faster I fall, until I’m only a few feet from the ground.
* * * *
I awake sweating a cold sweat. My heart is pounding so hard it hurts. I look around after catching my breath and notice I’m in my apartment room on the bed with the television on. I roll over and look at the clock. 9:15 am. I hear a beeping sound behind me and I turn to see Mr. Kimball shutting off the coffee maker and turning toward me with two cups of coffee in his hands. “Coffee?” he asks me casually.
“What?” I reply still in shock from the hellish night mare still fresh in my mind.
“Coffee?” he repeats.
“How long have you been here?”
“Only for about an hour and a half.”
“And you didn’t wake me?” I asked a little confused
“Well, you where dreaming and I-”
“And you watched me?!” I interrupted.
“No. I was watching TV.”
“And what are you doing here anyway?”
“I was going to ask you if you wanted to take some tests?” he said with a smile.
“At 9:00 in the morning?!” I complained.
Mr. Kimball shrugged.
“Do I have a choice?” I said already knowing the answer.
“Nope.” he said handing me a cup of coffee.
About three hours later I was in the backseat of a government van staring out at the rain. I am on my way to pick up my dad and my brother, john from the airport. I remember the last time I saw my dad, about seven months ago. I was so angry at him at the time, I remember telling him I never wanted to see his face again. Now I realize just how much I miss him. Not only just him but all my friends too. I left my friends in Florida when I moved to Adrian about a year ago, two years after my mom died.
My mom was killed in a car accident when a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and pined her car against a bridge pillar. She died at the scene. Her name was Tina Stacey Garner. She had long blond hair and my same bright blue eyes. I miss her a lot. I often think of her when I am frustrated or alone.
I was awakened out of my thoughts when the van stopped.
“well, this is the airport.” Mr. Kimball said to me from the front seat of the van.
“alright,” I said looking at the two guards sitting on either side of me. “who wants to escort me to the terminal?” I rolled my eyes.
“Alexcellya, you must understand-” Mr. Kimball started.
“I know, I know. Its only been about a week and a half since your government screw-up and you don’t know what affects it could have had on me, yada, yada, yada.” I finished for him. Mr. Kimball sighed and opened his mouth to speak but before he could say something, “look, lets just pick up my dad and John. Okay?” I was surprised at my sudden outburst. I stepped out of the van after one of the guards.
Shifting my feet on the blue carpet in the airport, I was starting to get antsy after an hour or so of waiting for my dad and brother to arrive. Mr. Kimball was just coming back from the help desk; he went to see if the due back date on my fathers plane had changed. “Alex, there’s been an accident.” Mr. Kimball said frowning. “what accident?” I replied with my voice beginning to strain for I saw the sorrow in his eyes.
It turns out my dads plane crashed in the Rocky Mountains due to a lighting bolt hitting their plain. There were no survivors.
I cried myself to sleep that night wondering if somehow my nightmare, that seemed so real, was linked to the plane accident. Premonition...
