The Way One Was

One
Two
Three.

One was the unimportant one.
Two to get to three.
Two more steps to go
And one would be big.

Two to get to five.
Two more steps to go
And one would no longer be small,
just like one.

Five to get to ten.
Bigger isn't enough.
One is still rather small,
And doesn't look that tough.

Two to get to twelve.
Yes, as sad as it is,
Ten is full of hardships
But twelve is just big.

Twelve.
One feels big, but lost.
The reason why,
Is because one's lost
The way one was.

Lemme know if it makes sense.

ArianKing Says:

I've probably misinterpreted this, but is it about how, as we reach different ages in our life, our feelings and outlook on life changes? The title "The Way One Was" being the Received Pronunciation (also known as Queen's English, or BBC English) version of "The Way I Was", rather than talking about "One" in the numerical sense. Just a guess.

WildBlueSun Says:

Yeah, I thought it was about ages as well.

Rieal Dragonsbane Says:

I think it's about leaving behind childhood. The narrator is afraid of the next step to become a teenager maybe?
