Opening

I hated the rain.

Leaning against a tall oak tree, I sighed. The branches hardly sheltered me from the cold water droplets, and the only thing keeping me calm was the soft pitter-patter of the rain falling on damp grass. Though, I was thankful that tonight it was raining, as it blocked out the moonlight.
I checked the watch on my wrist. 7.35PM. As it was Winter, the sky was already pitch black, the air was cold and most people were tucked inside their warm houses. I pressed my chin against the striped scarf around my neck, and shivered. My nose twitched slightly.
I pulled my fringe out of my face, and shoved my hands into my pockets. My hair was soaking wet, my clothes were freezing, and all I wanted to do was curl up in front of a warm fire.
My luck eventually ran out, as the clouds passed by the moon’s face, letting the moonlight shine over the Earth. I sighed again, pulling my fingerless gloves over my hands. I guess I had to run.
I lay a paw-like hand against the bark of the tree, and stared out in front of me. Without thinking through my plan, I dashed out from beneath the tree, and ran. Despite my effort to escape the moonlight, bad luck was on my side, as it struck me with a bright glow. I yelped, struggling frantically. But soon after, I had turned into my true form.

“…Damnit.”

I jumped to my feet. A large raindrop had hit me on the head, and woke me up from my short sleep. My eyesight sharpened, and I could sense every movement around me, as my long black tail twitched. I guess it wasn’t so bad, being a cat.
I relaxed my shoulders, and trotted over to the tree I was leaning against before. It seemed a lot taller now, as I looked up at it with my bright yellow eyes. Yet, still, I was soaking wet.
I sighed, and sat down on the damp grass, carefully inspecting my white-toed paws. I had to wait for the rain to settle down, and for the sky to clear up, as I could barely see where I was right now. I might even be seen by a human.
As I lived throughout my life, I noticed that it wasn’t normal for humans to turn into cats. It was only when I was five that I discovered that. I grew up in a wealthy lifestyle. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss it, but that’s not quite the point. My parents were close to another couple, and it was only natural that I’d become friends with that couple’s kid. But it all seemed to be too much to be a coincidence that he was also a Nekonjou.
