Without You

The sunlight dances
its way through the clouds outside
and shades within
to find my eyelids and caress them open.
And the first thing I see is You,
Quiet and still
dark hair against the pillow
a half smile on your face.
A remnant
of some pleasant dream.
Perhaps of me.
I reach over
to run my fingers
across the softness of your cheek
only for them to sweep across
the empty silken sheets.
In this moment
I Remember.
Though I won't believe.
A caustic pain entwines my being.
I yern to join you;
to hold you one more time
in unending bliss.
This fantasy
but a bittersweet dream.
And often
my thoughts may be of Our children,
of chores that need doing,
of trips and directions,
of work and worry.
But at This Moment
You are all mine.

This is a piece I wrote for a contest at school.
It's not my best work but I think it'll do.
