Chapter 4
___________________________________________

I dragged Blaine down the dusty road, checking for any signs of life. So far, none. I didn’t want anyone to see me, though I don’t know why. I just had a feeling that if anyone saw me and knew me, that they would tell my aunt, and that could mean trouble.

I stopped after a few minutes of utter silence, and let go of Blaine’s sleeve. I wanted to talk to him, and I was pretty sure that I couldn’t do that backwards. He probably wanted to talk to me to anyways; so I hoped.

I turned on my heels, and faced Blaine. He had a look of utter surprise etched on his face. He sure was surprised, because he left his mouth open for about five minutes; I counted.

I sighed in frustration, and slapped his arm. “Wake up. We need to talk before we reach town” I demanded. He still wasn’t out of it, it was like he frozen on the spot.

My anger grew, and I was afraid that my face was going to turn red in a few minutes.

I finally couldn’t take it anymore, and slapped his face. The slap echoed through the empty street; which I thought was impossible.

He finally snapped out if and closed his mouth. He dusted off his shirt and pants, and looked me in the eyes, he was finally being serious.

“I’m sorry, what did you say?” he asked me. I sighed with relief, and patted his shoulder.

“Good to have to back” I said. He didn’t seem satisfied with my answer.

“I said what did you say?” He asked again.

That’s where I got really mad. How dare he talk to me like that, like he ruled the world. He had no right, and he never would. I wouldn’t give him this one chance to be so rude to me, no I wouldn’t. I was putting my foot down there, never again will I take his imprudence.

“When we get to the town I will be calling you servant, as it is customary. Don’t be offended when I do, you only have to deal with it until the town is out of sight, ok?” I said to him kindly.

I couldn’t do it. I just couldn’t. He had looked so sad, so desperate! I just couldn’t bring myself to be mean to him, even if he didn’t talk to me right. I am so glad I don’t have to tell my friends about this, I would be the laughing stock of the whole town, maybe even in the country, maybe even the world.

He just nodded, and started walking down the desolate road once again. I followed in suit; even though I was supposed to be the leader, a servant never leads, the master does. But, I wasn’t going to let my poor demands get in the way of Blaine’s and my furthering friendship.

After a few minutes I could see the gates of our small town, and grabbed Blaine’s shoulder. “This is where we trade places” I said to him. I didn’t want to, but I knew it would disgrace for my father if he knew that I was being led by a servant; especially when had just arrived the day before.

As we switched places I thought about the events so far. It felt like I had known Blaine forever, and yet we just met yesterday. He probably knows me better than myself; which is very unusual. I knew few things about him; like how the thing he hates the most are guys who don’t respect a girls’ privacy, which hardly any guys listen to.

We reached the town in a matter of minutes. My nostrils were filled with the smell of rotten fish, burning vegetables, sweet fruit, and the smell of fire. The streets were filled with women, children, men, and travelers. My ears felt like they were going to explode from all of the noise, but I ignored the aching in my head and continued on my way.

I motioned for Blaine to follow me, even though I knew where we were going first was not a place for a guy; more like for a girl of my high status.

I soon found my way to a shop called “Raging Clothes” which was all about the clothes and how expensive they were. But, money was no object for my family, and I usually used my money carelessly; mostly because it makes my father mad when he learns that I have been spending his money again.

I entered the elegant shop, and stopped in my tracks. My best friend, Bianca was at the counter buying a(n) elegant gold dress covered in pearls. I quickly pushed Blaine out the door, and slipped next to the door.

“Don’t move, don’t make a sound, and if anyone asks who you are you just say that you are my servant. Got it?” I ordered, pointing my thin finger at him. He just nodded. I grinned, and walked back into the shop.

This time Bianca was looking in my direction. She cried with glee when she saw me, and ran over to me. She didn’t hug me, didn’t poke me, no, she just grinned. “I missed you so much” she cried.

I hugged her. I couldn’t help. She never hugged me; she usually waited for me to hug her.

Bianca was a short girl with blonde curly hair and pink cheeks. Her green eyes went well with her looks, and caught everyone’s eyes. She was wearing a plain green dress; which she usually wore when she came to town. She was rich; but not as rich as my family. Whenever there was a party, Bianca and I were the highlights of the party. Wherever we went, everyone else went.

After a few chats, she said “Goodbye” and left. I sighed with relief when she did; I thought she would never leave.

I walked out of the store empty handed and turned in the direction of where I had left Blaine.

He was gone.

I panicked and started to scream. The people around me stopped and stared; before realizing who I was. Soon I was surrounded by around ten people, all wanting to see what was wrong.

“Where is the boy who was standing here” I demanded of the crowd. They all stopped shuffling, and most of them left; figuring that another boy that I was courting had been dragged away by his parents. All accept one. It was a boy; a boy I knew well.

“Gill! Have you seen a boy that was standing here just a moment ago?” I asked him. He had been my childhood friend, and never lied to me. I could tell something was bothering him, and stepped closer to him. “Where is he” I demanded.

“The boys who have liked you for years took him away. They saw him with you, and didn’t like the sight of him hogging you. They said that you belonged to every boy who liked you. I am sorry, I was too scared to do anything about it. Please forgive me” he mumbled.

I ignored his plea and ran to where I thought he was; the old Mill. It was about five minutes, which was how long it had taken me to get out of one discussion with my best friend. Who knew what they were doing to him now.

I ran as fast as my long legs could take me; feeling like I could actually fly at any moment.

I reached the old Mill, and saw a crowd of boys. I felt fear wash over me, and ran faster than I had before; which I didn’t think was possible.

When I finally reached the boys, they were crowded around someone, or maybe two someone’s. I pushed the group of boys aside and looked into the circle.

A boy I knew and Blaine were in fighting stances.

Blaine had a few bruises on his face, and about ten on his left arm. The boy beside him was Richard. Richard was probably the leader of my fan club, and probably the second hated man I had ever known. He had spent hours upon hours flirting with me at parties, and never let another man near me. I should’ve figured it was him.

“STOP!” I screeched. The group grew silent, but all eyes were on the two boys; who had failed to notice me at all.

I was about to scream once more, when Richard’s right hand land on Blaine’s right eye.

I screamed in fear, and pushed Richard out of the way.

“Blaine, please wake up! I need you! Remember, we need get back to the estate! You promised me that you wouldn’t leave me, ever! Please don’t close your eyes!” I cried.

His body was shaking, as well was mine.

I felt a sharp pain in my head, and before I knew it I was crowded in darkness.

I had fainted, leaving Blaine alone with the crowd of jealous boys.
