The King's Unkown mistress
Screaming people are running back and forth. I get kicked to the curb and have some time to realize what everything looks like. I look up and see burning houses, flames licking people’s heels and black tar coming down from the hill. The place I’m in used to be beautiful! There where little huts and houses everywhere and lots of land. Rolling hills would flow around all the little houses and huts. There was one BIG hill I would watch my older brother and sister roll down. At the present time boiling tar was burning that big hill, people on the hill and my memories. As I lie in awe at everything and try to take it in my sister and brother picked me up and carried me through all of the people away from the fire and the burning tar. My sister’s curly brown silk like hair was in knots and smothered with dirt. Her face was wet with tears and her blue eyes glistening from them still rolling down her straight nose. Her mouth was gritted with anger. I finally remembered my brother leading the way through everybody. His brown eyes fighting back tears and trying not to panic. His brown blonde hair wet with sweat. His muscles like arms were almost knocking people over to get away. Surprisingly I never noticed the skin color of my siblings. My sister who was carrying me was as pail as the white sheet we used to sleep on. My brother on the other hand was tan and his face turning red with anger. At one I realized he was biting his lip out of nervousness so much it was bleeding. His thin lips trying to shout to people to move .I closed my and put my head on my sister’s green and gold torn dress and I smelled my brothers torn clothes. It smelled like our shop, our shop of candles. It was the smell of home and at that I fell asleep as I not even noticing people screams and the other smell of burning flesh trying to get past the smell of home to make me terrified, thank god it didn’t. As I drifted in to sleep, the only place I could actually feel safe (at the moment), I opened my eyes to look at my home and my father’s shop. With that as my last sight of my real home, I fell asleep.
That all happened when I was a little girl just above the age of 4. That day is the day I lost my home and my mother. My mother had big brown eyes and a tiny little nose that curved up like a spoon curve. She had dark brown, curly hair that she would let roll down her shoulders. Her skin was as fair as a marigold. She wore the elegant dresses even though she was the wife of a candle maker. She took pride in what her husband did. She walked around the shop and the neighborhood like she was the queen of England! I loved her with all my heart and I didn’t know anyone who couldn’t. Today on the day of her 8th anniversary of death I cry. I cry for all that was lost and all that can’t be gained. I cry in my little room on top of my little candle shop outside Whitehall. I look around my crappy room. The wood is getting worn away and is stained with random fluids. My room only has a desk, a bed fit for me and my sister and a big box to put my clothes in. the bed only had a few sheets on it just enough to make us warm. Since I haven’t mentioned this yet my brother’s name is William and my sister’s name is Isabel. My name is Eva. My name is practically the most exotic in all of Christendom! The little neighbor hood my family lived in was small, but nice. My family’s shop was small and had two floors. The first floor had the shop as the room you walk into and the next room was the kitchen. The top floor had three rooms, one for my dad, one for my brother and one for Isabel and I. The room my dad slept in was forbidden for any of us to enter and us means everybody. My brother only had a straw mat and a box to put his clothes in. He was going to get betrothed soon to a nice lady named Anne Willow. My sister also was to get betrothed to a man she hated and despised. He was named Henry Back. I luckily had no plans of any marriage plans. I helped with the house and I made clothes for the family. I loved to garden outside our shop. I think it will make people feel close to home or something.
I wipe away my tears and get up off my bed to go fix myself up in front of the mirror. I look in the mirror at my golden brown wavy hair. My fair skin glistening on my face because of my tears. My brown big eyes were bloodshot from my crying. My full lips where wet from my tears. I smoothed out my rag dress I did my work in. I looked at my chest. I developed my breasts early so they were round and plump completely filling up my dresses. I will admit I was a little bit over weight, but just barely. I got my brush and smoothed out my hair. “Eva I need you!” my dad shouted. I ran down the steps to help my father with whatever his request would be. As I came down I saw a gentleman talking to my dad. I only saw the back of his head. “Father?” I replied. Both men turned their heads except one was my father and the other was a beautiful creature. The man’s hair was of red brown color and his cheeks pale with millions of freckles. His eyes where blue, big and full of life .his nose was straight, but was covered with freckles. His lips where thin and long. My face was flushed of its color at the sight of him. “What would you like me to do father?” I mumbled as I dropped my head slightly for my messy moment. My father gave me a small smile “ I would like you to get me one of the finest candles you can find in the gallery.” The gallery was our stock of candles in a big bookshelf. I was still in aw about how beautiful this man was, until I finally realized what I was supposed to do. I quickly skidded through the two men. I walked quickly to the bookshelf and skimmed the shelves looking for the best one. Out of all of the dripping discolored candles I finally found the one that was perfect. I stretched to pick it up and couldn’t reach it. As I made a second attempt to get I felt a warm breathe come on my neck. A long manly arm stretched right on top of mine. As I slowly turn my head looking at is green shirt and gold pants I get the courage to look this stranger in the eye and find it is the same man I thought was so beautiful. He smiled at me with pearly white teeth. “Is this the one you’re looking for?” he said as he handed me the candle I couldn’t reach. I nodded my head using all my energy. I smile at him a little bit ditsy with desire. The man slowly separated our bodies and I felt myself lean toward him. I quickly pulled back not to feel desperate. At the corner of my eye I saw my father smile at us. I quickly curtsied with my little rag of a dress. I walked to the stairs and tried to lift up my head to show some pride and dignity. “Eva, you should meet the man you just helped a trifle.” My father said. I turned around and I kept my gaze locked with the gentleman’s. After our gaze held for a while he smiled and with that smile I knew he forfeited with me and saw a little dignity and pride. I gave him a flirtatious half smile. “This is my friend Robert Dudley.” My father said with a hidden smile of pride. “Hello, Robert Dudley.” I said quietly while I curtsied and the half smile still spread across my face except into a full smile. At this sight, he smiled widened and my heart and stomach flipped. His eyes seemed to draw me in and his lips looked so welcoming. I immediately snapped myself out of his hypnotizing ways. He seemed to realize how much I was drawn to him. To save myself of embarrassment I quickly said, “ I have some sewing I have to catch up on. Nice meeting you Robert Dudley, Father” I curtsied and tried to slip out of the room without any questions or anything. Of course my ambitions were too high as always.
“ May I see your sewing work?” Robert said curiously.
I opened up my mouth to protest, but I knew father would want me to get my sewing and prey to god he thought it was good. “Okay, let me get it quickly.” I said as I curtsied. My legs started to hurt from so many curtsies. I walked up the stairs as gracefully as possible. Of course that didn’t work. I stubbed my toe and heard a small chuckle, which probably came from the low, warm voice of Robert Dudley. I cursed under my breath at my stupidity. I carelessly walked up the rest of the stairs. I knocked on my door trying to respect my sister’s privacy if she was home, no answer. I opened the door and franticly looked for my sewing or anything that related to it. I found my sewing cloth almost immediately after 5 minutes. Embarrassed I came down the creaky stairs. At each step I heard a different creak; at each step I didn’t want to take I yearned to take it too. I looked up at Robert Dudley and pushed my messy hair to the side. I looked at him as I went down the stairs making sure my gaze stayed locked with his. As I got to the last creaky step he nodded in respect and I gave him a sly smile and looked at my father. He was smiling at the two of us; I gave him an annoyed never going to happen I’m some random person and he’s some rich person look. “So shall I see your needle work?” Robert Dudley said without any hesitation. “Oh, yes, here it is.” I said as I handed him my sewing cloth. I hesitated to give it to him, but then I looked up at him and he gave me a reassuring smile with two dimples showing. I relaxed and handed it to him as I did our hands touched and shivered with desire. It almost seemed as though our hands touching brought more light into the room. His rough big hand toke my sewing cloth from my tiny slightly rough hand. I took a step back and waited for his response.
“Very nice, very nice indeed.” Robert Dudley said cheerfully.
I let out a silent sigh of relief, but somehow Robert knew that I was sighing.
Almost at once my father said “Why don’t you get your candle and pay we don’t want you late for any important business now do we?” my father looked at me with his agree with me look.
“Ah yes, you should be going for if you were late for anything we would not wont it at our expense.” I said obediently.
Robert Dudley nodded and laid the money on the table. My father gazed at the money and counted to make sure he didn’t forget to pay a cent. “That seems about right.” My father said happily. “I will come often since the king likes to have a lot of light in court because it brings joy.” Robert Dudley said. “When should we be expecting you Lord Robert?” my father said cautiously. “Oh who knows, I’ll see you later then good day.” Robert said as he toke a step to the door. As his hand touched the handle he looked back at me and gave me a warm welcoming smile that made me feel like a lovesick maiden in court. I could feel myself urge me to take a few steps toward him, but I quickly stopped myself from utter embarrassment. He could almost sense my desire rise up in my body. He chuckled his sexy laugh. I couldn’t help, but smile and curtseyed. He winked and left. At that I let out a sigh. I turned to my father who happily smiled at my flirtatiousness with Lord Dudley. He waved his hand in dismissal. And I curtseyed and picked up my sewing and my skirt that was draped around my body touching the ground gracelessly. I stumbled up the stairs dizzy with desire. I flipped onto my bed and shut my eyes hoping for Lord Dudley to come back into the room and invite me to come with him at court and stay with him. Oh, the wonderful court I dreamed of it every day like I do now.
* * * *
Today my father woke me in a hurry.
“It’s time to go Eva get your finest riding gown on were going riding!”
I woke lazily with my hair everywhere. My eyelashes fluttered on my skin. I yawned and got up and looked at my father who looked completely nervous and excited all mixed together. I tilted my head to show my confusion.
“Oh my daughter you didn’t realize today is the day that everybody can go out and hunt with the king!” My father smiled “And you my daughter are a perfect woman to catch the king’s eye.” He finished
I realized immediately what he meant and jumped up at the thought. Why not my sister to catch the kings eye? I shrugged at the thought because I knew why. My sister was awaiting marriage. I got up and pulled on my best riding clothes that weren’t exactly… nice. I quickly washed all over and soaked and washed every part of my body till I looked wrinkled. I looked at my body in my nice red riding clothes with silver trimming that looked dazzling. My brown blonde hair tumbled down my shoulders with waves of brown rippling all over. I brushed my hair and tried to check for lice by myself, but it was helpless. I found I looked ridiculous trying to look at my head with my eyes looking up as far as possible with me head tilted back. I laughed and made myself look serious and for some weird reason I burst out laughing. I suppressed my last giggle with my satisfaction of laughing my head off I looked in the mirror once again and put on my most attractive face and lightly stroked my neck graciously with my hand. I looked irresistible as far as I could tell. I smiled a little half, sexy smile and satisfied with my appearance. I walked out of my room with my chin up and my head high. I walked down the stairs and smiled down at my father looking very nice. He smiled at my beauty and nodded with approval. I smiled my pleasant smile and walked the rest of the steps down. He opened the door to go outside and we walked silently to the stable where we kept our horses. My horse Rose may was, to me, the most beautiful of all the horses and the most different. She had the most beautiful mane that was auburn that flowed so easily. Her body was a crisp chestnut color except for her stockings. She had a straight line of whit going from the top of her head to the bottom of her nose. She was so beautiful I couldn’t help put get delighted at the sight of her. She neighed with pleasure at the sight of me. I ran to get a sugar cube for her. I lifted it to her mouth; she sniffed it curiously and with complete delight realized it was a sugar cube. She gulped it down quickly and once again neighed with pleasure and I smiled at that. How wonderful she was. I patted her nose lightly and saw my father nod to one of the stable boys to lift my up onto my beautiful horse. The stable boy that was half naked scrambled to his feet to assist me and I let out a little giggle at his complete unawareness. He cupped his rough hands together and I hopped on top of my horse. She neighed with delight again and was almost rearing with eagerness to get out. I laughed as I realized my own eagerness to see Lord Dudley. I hadn’t seen him in at least 3 weeks. As my father jumped onto his horse he led me out and he led me straight to the center of Whitehall. We walked past markets and other people on horses walking to the hunt with the king. I the realized I would be one of many daughters or wives there, one of many people trying to catch the king’s eye, one of many trying to have a better fortune or gain some land. How disturbing it made me feel to be thinking of how it must feel to have thousands of people asking favors and tempting you with beautiful and pretty women? I told myself silently to not have high hopes of seeing lord Dudley or catch the eye of anyone important. I looked around as the birds fluttered high above our heads and almost danced to a rhythm. I smiled at thought of birds dancing and it looked like they were dancing for me. I almost laughed, but saw no point. I was very giggly that day. Oh, I hope I don’t do something embarrassing like giggle at the wrong moment or something! Don’t stress out everything will be fine was all I could say to get me to calm down. As we approached Whitehall it was so beautiful especially now when all the horses coming in or out with their owners. I held my head high and proud with a slight smile on my face. Whitehall was a huge castle with white all over it almost pure white. Flowers were scattered everywhere and in full bloom. The castle was so grand I stopped my breath short. Of course I have been there before, but it never looked so, so magnificent! I looked at my father and he didn’t even catch a glimpse of my overwhelmed face. He kept going and I followed his lead and put my head upward. I slightly tilted my head to see if I could see someone I knew (Robert Dudley). My father somehow knew why I was tilting my head and he looked at me with a get your head up straight and don’t tilt it again face. I immediately listened to my father and straightened my head. We walked in Whitehall and saw millions of tapestries on the walls. My jaw dropped at their beauty and fine needlework. I almost smacked myself at my stupidity of my jaw dropping and I then smiled slightly again. As we walked in to the stables I got off my horse with the help of a random stable boy. I brushed my riding clothes off and tried to rearrange my hair. I looked at my father for further instructions, he waved his hand for me to explore, but I had to come back soon to go on the hunt. I slid away and watched all of the gentlemen and women ordering things yelling and getting their most beautiful daughter to look their best. I chuckled at all of them racing around the stable this way and that. Almost as if the chuckle called him I felt a warm breathe come on my bare neck. I whipped around and saw Robert Dudley standing there in his gorgeous clothes. This time he wore a white shirt and golden shirt. His hair was messed up on his head. He almost looked like an angel that fell from heaven and honored me with attention. I tried to hide my blush of that thought and I saw him smile a big white smile.
“Hello, Mistress Eva. What a wonderful surprise to see you.” He said with the smile still wide and happy.
“Hello lord Dudley what a surprise to see you.” I said and curtseyed and walked away trying to get him to come after me.
As I walked away I turned my head and through him a small half smile and walked to my horse Rose may. When I slipped through all of the running people and got to my horse and she saw me and got filled with energy. Rose may loves me so much and I love her too. She was practically kin to me. I smiled with delight at her eagerness. I saw my father get on his own horse and then I saw something that made me catch my breath, the king. He came in with the most glorious smile. His red curls peeking out of his red cap lined with gold trim. He had a red shirt with gold designs on it very where it glistened in the sun. His pants weren’t much different except they where one his legs. He had a muscular body as was around 26. He came in and hopped gracefully onto his jet-black hunter that was as eager as the king it looked. I had a stable boy run over cup his hands and help me over onto my horse. I looked for my father and saw him looking at the king and realized every single person was looking at him as if he was a god. Half of them dumbfounded the other half collecting them while bowing their heads and taking off their caps. The king started to go out of the stable and everyone else followed as fast as they could. My father started to go to follow the king with another 50 gentlemen. They all scattered and stumbled almost to get next to the king asking for the most random of things or telling him complaints. The king brushed them off because he was there for the fun in the sport and for the thrill of hunting. I didn’t run to the front as all of the other families did. My horse and I trotted slowly, but didn’t race to the front. I was in the part with the least people, which I enjoyed. Being in the front to just make this magnificent king have to listen to something else was not going to be my doing at all. I looked at the hounds as they raced to find a scent. I found that they all looked like ants running to get to some sweet meat crumb that fell and was going to be there dinner. I chuckled a little at their complete joy to get a stag or deer. I then saw a horse fall back from the group of people and come side by side to mine. Rose may neighed because of the new company. This horse was a completely white hunter with small gray specks around its back. It had icy blue eyes unlike my horse’s dark ocean blue eyes. The rider was, of course, Lord Dudley. He smiled at me as I went a little faster so he would be left behind as I moved forward. He, in response, made his horse move forward and saw his smile widen as he knew if he would want to talk to me there would be a chase I made my horse canter in Rose May’s delight. She loved to go fast, but she knew that whatever I wished her to do she would do and she would do it happily. I saw the white hunter canter and come along side mine. I never looked directly in to Lord Robert’s eyes for I knew I would lose control of myself and blush like mad. I dropped back into a slow trot again and to my delight Lord Dudley followed. I surrendered and didn’t move forward or back. Instead I looked up into his eyes and saw a joy of a chase and a joy of winning.
“Hello Mistress Eva, once again hello.” Lord Dudley said with enthusiasm.
“Hello Lord Dudley. Why aren’t you up with the king? I hear you’re favored above all.” I said coldly.
Lord Dudley chuckled a seductive laugh. His grin widened with that remark.
“Oh, I think I’m much more favored here.” Lord Dudley said cleverly.
“I think you would be more warmly welcomed up front and more wanted.” At that I dropped my horse back in triumph. Lord Dudley did not come after me, thank god. I didn’t think I could keep myself from not looking like a milkmaid in summer love. As I listened more closely I heard Lord Dudley remarking how stupid he had been and he crumpled up his cap, but he took a breath and calmed down. I had the delight of knowing he wanted me. I smiled a little at that. I could hear the hounds howling so I couldn’t hear Lord Dudley curse under his breath about me. The hounds had finally caught a scent. Everybody went racing in the hound’s direction. Rose may reared up and I held on while trying to look graceful. She calmed down and then I went into a canter toward the direction. I made sure that I wasn’t in the back and I wasn’t in the front, but around the middle. When I saw the stag my horse got even more excited. I pulled her to a trot because I knew that the stag, which was so graceful and so beautifully brown, should not be used for a sport or be killed. I knew that the king would catch up to it or the hounds would and it would die a shameful death. My eyes started to tear up, but there was nothing I could do about it and I knew that. I brushed off a few tears and got angry with myself for crying for a stag’s future death. I sighed and saw a little stream and I urged Rose may to go up to it. I jumped down from my horse even though it was difficult. I got Rose may by the reins and walked up to the stream. Her face lit up and drank some of the crystal clear water. I took of my riding glove and put my finger tips in the water I saw little fish come up and nibble on them. I smiled at the sensation of the small sucking on my fingertips. They where gold-orange fish that were around an inch long and they sometimes had little black spots. There was one special that I liked the most. It had big beady black eyes and a long fin. The fin was completely black, but the fish’s body was orange. It was the most different of all the fish, which were usually pure orange-gold. I smiled down at it. The fish swam up to my finger and suckled on it. I giggled at the feeling. I then realized the horses where coming back. I heard millions of thumping hooves coming to the stable .Was the beautiful stag dead or did they let him go? I didn’t want to know the outcome so I looked down. Rose may, getting excited at so many horses, urged me to join the pack I got up and looked at the various people riding around joyfully. Of course my father was with his gray hunter near the front nearest to the king. He was filled up to his head in ambition and this was the perfect time for him to shine. I guessed he already introduced himself to the king a million times over. I was suddenly frightened because I knew my father would want me with the pack of people. I put on my riding glove and saw him say something to the king and nod in my direction. The king was the most handsome man in the huge pack of people. The king looked at me with his blue eyes gazing at me. My breath was cut short as I saw him scan my figure. I gave him my seductive smile I practiced in the mirror and did a little curtsey. I then paid all of my attention to Rose may. I patted her nose and let my fingers stroke her back. She was as soft as a flower and I smiled at the softness. I knew the King’s eyes where lingering on myself and I tried to look as desirable as possible. I jumped on my horse gracefully and made slowly trot to the pack of people once again. I let her canter there since she could barely contain herself. I laughed aloud as she cantered to the pack .I could sense the king smile a warm smile on me. I glanced in his direction and through him the same smile I gave Lord Robert. Apparently it worked, and the king smiled I turned my head away and got into the pack again. I tried to remember the spot in the stream where the pretty fish was I wanted to visit it and watch it suckle on my fingertips. I made my horse slow down to a trot. I knew the King had seen me and liked what he had seen. I then knew the game of “love” was in play and he made the first move.
