Chapter 2
____________________________________________
I ran frantically back to my bedroom, worried that I would be late for dinner. Dinner was important in my household; it was the only time the family got together and really talked. There were serious consequences if I was late; such as being grounded or no dinner.
I flung myself into my room; shutting Blaine out. I slipped out of my clothes, and grabbed my light pink dress. After I got the tight dress on, I ran over to my vanity to do my hair. I soon realized that I couldn’t do my hair; I could only brush it and put it in a ponytail. I needed my maid.
I swiftly walked over to my door, and flung it open. Blaine was ready to go, but I was not. He was smiling, but I was not. We were total opposites when it came to dinner. Even though it was his first dinner here, he seemed happy; that wouldn’t last long.
“Call for Rosemarie! Quickly!” I ordered him, and walked back into my desolate room without seeing if Blaine had left or not.
After a minute of silence, a soft knock was heard at my door. I jumped up and ran over to my door. I opened it, and grabbed my maid’s petite hand and pulled her into my room; slamming the door in Blaine’s face. I would have to apologize to him later; right now I have important matters to get to.
“Do my hair, and quickly” I exclaimed. She just nodded and grabbed a brush a few ribbons.
Rosemarie was a petite young woman. She was only nineteen, but very helpful. She had auburn hair with a tint of red in it that went down to her waist. She usually put it up, for it was customary for a maid of our household to do so; but today she did not. She was very skinny, but she was not so skinny that you could see her bones. She had chocolate brown eyes. She wore her usual outfit of a simple maid dress and an apron tied around her petite waist. In my eyes, she was beautiful.
She finished my hair in five minutes, and wiped her hands on her apron. She stepped back to look at her work. She seemed satisfied.
My hair was put up in a bun, surrounded with ribbons, and a clip to make sure my bangs didn’t hang out. It was beautiful.
I looked at myself in the mirror; finally. My brown hair looked beautiful, my hazel eyes glistened in the light, and my petite face was as smooth as ever. I was satisfied with Rosemarie’s handy work; I always was.
I got up, and stood in front of Rosemarie. I shook her hand, and walked over to my door. I opened it widely, and looked for Blaine.
Blaine was on the across from my door; cowering from the open door. I was saddened at the thought that he was scared of a piece of wood; even though it hurt him three times in a row.
I walked over to him, and held my hand out to him. “Come on, we have to go” I said; smiling. His wary eyes looked at my hand for a second. He didn’t budge. I was getting pretty irritated by this moment.
“Just take my bloody hand! We have to go!” I nearly screamed. His eyes widened in surprise; and he wasn’t the only one. I was surprised at my raised voice as well.
I pulled my hand back, and lowered my eyes. “I’m sorry for yelling. I am just scared that my father might not like you and send you away. Please forgive me” I muttered. I didn’t look up, afraid to see him reject my apology.
His warm hand pulled my face up, and I was looking into his blue eyes again. “I forgive you. We should go” he whispered. I still loved his voice, and I would’ve been trapped in it; if I didn’t have to go see my father.
I nodded, and ran down the narrow corridors; for the second time this day. Blaine was on my heel, and I was running as fast as I could in a tight dress. I cursed under my breath. I was going to be late. “Hurry up!” I yelled behind me.
We finally reached the dining room. The doors were doubled, and were as big as the ceiling. I was always afraid of the dining room. It was big and spacious, and not very as beautiful as the rest of the estate. We used it sometimes for dancing, but I fancied staying away from dances that were in the dining room. I didn’t even eat breakfast in there anymore.
I pushed my scared thoughts away as I pushed the door(s) open, revealing my father and his personal butler. I held my head up as high as it was willing to go as I walked over to the oversized table; Blaine beside me.
My father’s name was Benson Parker. He was a tall man, and very stiff. I would usually call him the “Stiff Man” around my friends. He had a darker shade of brown hair and green eyes. He was starting to get wrinkles under his eyelids and on his cheekbones. He was getting older.
My mother was absent; as she always will be.
I smiled at him as I sat down in my usual seat across from him. Blaine was behind me, and shadowed my empty plate. “Hello dear father, how are you this lovely night” I said as sweetly as I could.
He grinned. I hated his grin; it showed his now yellow teeth. “Well, I am doing well. I see you got yourself a new servant. He is a nice sturdy man, are you sure you want him?” he asked me. He wanted Blaine; and I wasn’t going to give Blaine to him.
I nodded. “Yes, I am sure that I want him” I responded. My father frowned. “I thought you had enough servants already” he muttered. I shook my head. “I only have three servants, father. You have hundreds, I am sure you can spare this one” I said.
He nodded slowly. I could see that he was hesitating. He must really want Blaine.
Soon dinner was over, and I was free to leave.
I made my way over to the huge double doors, Blaine following. “Wait Abigail. I would like to say one more thing” he said. I frowned slightly as I turned around. “Yes, father” I said sweetly.
“I would just like to say goodnight, and that I won’t be around for a couple of weeks. I will be going on a trip. So, enjoy your time here without me. I am sure you will make the best of it” he said. My face paled. I nodded, and turned back to the door.
I closed the door(s) behind me, and gave a sharp breath. I closed my eyes, and steadied my heavy breathing. I could tell that Blaine was worried about me, but we couldn’t talk until we reached my room; we couldn’t talk when my father was so close by.
I walked to my room slowly, thinking my father’s words through. I hated to think about what was going to happen in the short two weeks of my father’s leave. I didn’t want to think about it, but I certainly would have to; to explain it to Blaine.
I dragged Blaine into my room, and closed my door slowly. Thankfully Rosemarie had returned to her room, and left my room as it was.
I sat down on my queen sized bed and just thought for a few seconds; before Blaine interrupted my thoughts.
“What’s wrong with your father leaving?” he asked heavily. I could tell that he was scared. I didn’t want to tell him, but I had to.
I opened my eyes, and looked into Blaine’s sky blue eyes. “It means trouble” I said. Blaine took a deep breath, and closed his eyes.
“What kind of trouble” he said sharply. How dare he talk to me in such a tone. What kind of servant talked to his/her master with such disgrace.
I jumped up from my bed and slapped him. “You never talk to me like that! Never!” I screeched! I was angry, and his rude tone of voice just made me snap. I could see that Blaine was surprised.
“I’m sorry, I just don’t want to tell you what it means when my father leaves” I said quietly. He nodded in understanding.
I sighed with relief, and sat back down on my fluffy bed. “When my father leaves my aunt comes to stay and take care of me” I said simply.
Blaine looked at me curiously. “What does that mean?” he asked.
“It means big trouble. Especially for a new servant. But, don’t worry. I’ll make sure she doesn’t touch you” I said.
His eyes narrowed in thought. “How?” he asked.
I just shook my head. “Because, I have more power that she does, but she is trouble. There is no doubt that the next two weeks will be hell” I said.
“You shouldn’t cure, Lady Abi. It is improper” he said. That is all he said. Finally the night was over.
I soon would wish that this night could go on forever, and never have to go through the next two weeks. I just would die if my horrible aunt touched Blaine, and I am sure she will.
I will give her a fight if she does, you can count on that.
