Birdy's Morning--Kankuro

This is unfinished, obviously, but I wanted to show you guys what a piece of mine looks like while I'm working on it--there certainly are other works I've seen and I would leap at the chance to see what their work looked like before it was finished. (Also, I brought my notebook to school and I felt like scanning it for the hell of it, so blah.)

I love this piece!! I'm finally drawing him without giving him fucking DBZ anatomy. I really, really like it.

Before I inked it, I had left Kankuro's face without makeup, because I wanted to draw more of that. Then I inked the outline, and everything was cool. But then I decided to give a shadow to the fold of flesh at the corner of his mouth for his smile--and it ruined what I was going for. SO, thinking that with more pen work applied to his face would help draw attention away from it, I shaded his brow, the sides of his face, his nose, and then I concentrated on leaving faint lines across the rest of his face--as you can see, the nullify the lines around his mouth.

Well, if you look closely, you'll see that when I get the the *thinks* LEFT side of his face, the lines going downward abruptly became darker. I had fucked up. It's a delicate process, and you can't go too slow or more ink will be deposited onto the paper. So, I had to darken the rest of his face.

Now he looked like Jiraiya.

That was pretty fucking funny.

I thought about titling this then to a Jiraiya picture, but I decided against it, because, dammit, I want my KANKURO!!

So to assure myself that it was him, I added his makeup, thus negating the original intent of drawing this picture--to draw a picture of him without makeup.
