Chapter 2
I walked silently back to our small cottage. I wouldn’t even dare to look back at my father’s stern face. I hadn’t the heart to. I knew that if I looked at him, I would start asking him what is going on, and why is it a bad thing. I know I would, and I knew he would not like. I also didn’t feel liking talking to him.
I ignored the birds who tried to land on me, for I did not care for anything anymore. I did not care that my father felt bad that I had finally found out that he was hiding something from me, I just knew it. I ignored everything, from my father to the animals. My mind was aroused with questions.
What is going on? Why would my father keep a secret from me? Did my step-mother know anything about this? Who were those kids?
I didn’t stop thinking about, until I hit our rusted door. “Ow.” I muttered. I heard my father chuckle, but saved him a glare, he would get it later. I slammed the door open, and threw myself on my small bed in the left corner of the house. I sniffed, as I started to cry into my small pillow. I heard my father walk over to my step-mother.
I could hear them talking, but I ignored it. I did not want to hear anything. All I wanted to hear was my slight wailings. I didn’t think it was fair. Why me? I guess that the situation could explain why I have gold eyes. I hated them, even though everyone admired them. I know that when I said I was the “gold eyed girl” in front of those mysterious kids, that it sounded like I was hated.
I was not. I was actually admired. For that, I hated my eyes. I wanted to be normal, not special. Everyone in the village wanted me to go to school, just so they could see my eyes. I knew that was the reason why they wanted me to go to school, they couldn’t fool me. I knew what they were thinking.
The village thinks that my eyes bring fortune to our village. I did not get how it could. It only brought me misery. I had few friends. My friends were the only ones who didn’t treat me special. I loved that about my friends.
As I thought about my friends, I thought about my little sister and brother. I shot up. I could see that it surprised my step-mother and father. “Can I go pick up Chloe and Garret?” I asked quickly. My step-mother nodded slowly. I smiled and ran out of the house as quickly as I could.
I couldn’t be happier. I was so happy that I could finally get out of that house! I was starting to get irritated at the tension in there.
When I finally reached the village, I bumped into a few grownups. They all smiled at me, a glint in each eye. I gulped. Here it came. The talks. Usually, when I came to the village, the villagers always asked me if I was going to go to school, or asked me to marry their son. I was happy when I was 7, but now it was just plain annoying. I mean, a 14 year old, almost 15, getting questioned about marriage? How weird is that? I think it is extremely weird, as well as annoying.
“Have you decided to marry my son?” “No! She is marrying my son!” “Have your parents decided to send you to school yet?” “They should! I mean, a 14 year old with no education is just wrong!” “I agree”, I was bombarded with questions. I just smiled at them. I had gotten used to the questions.
“No to all of your questions. I need to go see my friends, and tell my siblings to go home” I said. Their smiles turned to frowns, and they all walked away. I silently cheered for my victory. I was getting better at making them go away, with a soft blow. I quickly walked over to the Jimmy’s Inn, and sighed before I opened the door. The smell of whiskey filled the air.
As usual, they were selling beer this afternoon, and the children were out back. I quickly passed by the staring travelers, and made my way to the backyard of the Inn. I saw my brother immedietly. His black hair streaking across the Jimmy’s backyard. I laughed as he fell. He was as clumsy as usual.
My brother noticed me, and ran over to me. He jumped in front of me, trying to see if he could jump high enough to be over my head, and of course, he was not. I giggled as he pouted. “Don’t worry. You’ll get taller than me in a few years” I soothed. He just kept pouting.
I pouted at him. “Why are you sad?” I asked. No answer. I started to fake cry. “You hate me don’t you?” I cried. His sad face suddenly turned to a smile, and tackled me to the ground. “You’re the best sister ever” he cried with glee. I giggled.
“I agree!” I heard my sister laugh. I turned my head to the side, just to see her laughing on the floor. That’s right. The floor. Laughed harder. “I have the weirdest siblings ever” I laughed.
When we finally stopped laughing, I told them that they had to go home. They pouted and asked me why I was staying. “I am going to see Luna” I said. Chloe smiled. “It’s about time! She has been in a depression lately, and needs your help” she said. I frowned. This news worried me.
“Why?” I asked, worriedly. Chloe gave the “I’m getting to it” look. I giggled. “Rumor has it that her boyfriend broke up with her” she said finally. I thanked her as they walked off.
The news of her breakup was really surprising. They had liked each other since God knows when. I was slightly depressed, because I knew that he was her first boyfriend. Even the slightest thought of his name made me growl. He should burn in hell for this, I thought.
I quickly ran over to Luna’s house. I heard soft cries as I got closer, and quickened my pace. I finally reached the left side of her house, where we would always meet, and saw her sobbing. I walked over to her and wrapped my arms around her. She flinched.
“I’m so sorry” I whispered. She let it all out, and I was soon covered in salty tears. I did not care that I was getting wet. I cared more about my best friend than anything else. I even forgot about the secret that my father was hiding from me. I quickly forgot everything, except comforting her, and listened to her story, just like a best friend should.
She would forever be my best friend, and I knew that it would never change. Never in a million years…..
