Vampire Encounter
I could feel it. It was that cold excitement that filled my buoyant smile and swished around in my stomach. It was that feeling that only came once a year; at Halloween. I stood in front of a huge, menacing rot iron gate and let this feeling developed. It was stronger than ever this year. This year, it engulfed my very being and devoured my sanity. As I was about to do the one thing every kid in my school was too afraid to do; approach the 'Cross Family Mansion'.
For the past year, a family called the 'Cross Family' (I have no clue if that's their real name) has been living in an old, crumbling mansion about a block away from mine. Rumors have been flying ever since October began that the Cross Family were actually vampires. That interested me and I decided that I would make myself know to this mysterious family of 'vampires'. The plan was simple; say hi and leave. The fog had thickened around my legs and it seemed to raise my spirit. Slowly, and carefully, I wrapped my long fingers around one of the cold metal bars. A shiver ran down my spine as I shoved it open softly.
Creeeeeeeiaaaackee! The sound that the gate made was satisfying.
and seemed to linger the the air long after it had actually stopped. I inhaled a long, deep breath, straightened out my witches hat, and stared straight ahead with a deep sense of determination. I was going to do this. I started down the walkway. At first, my stroll was steady, but as I got farther that stroll became a trot which became a fast jog (and jogging in a witch's dress is not easy). I made it to the door, huffing and smiling like and idiot.
The door was ornate. A large, silver rose and sword knocker hung it the middle center of the dark oak door. They certainly had cleaned the entrance up. It reminded me of some kind of royal castle from a movie. I reached out ward for the knocker. My finger tips were just millimeters from the rose when the whole door swung inward. I gasped involuntarily, then slapped my hand over my mouth.
A tall, skinny boy with black hair stood in the doorway. His eyes were directed my way. I grimaced slightly at his scowling expression.
"May I help you with something?" He asked, still looking at me like a crazy lady.
"He, He! No, I was actually just... just..." I looked around me for an excuse for my arrival as I realized I didn't think my plan through too well. Suddenly, I remembered; It's Halloween!
"I was just trick or treating! Ha! Trick or treat!" I smiled proudly at my 'cleverness'.
He stared a t me for a moment. I'm sure I was only standing there for half a minute, give or take, but it felt like an eternity to me. His gray eyes seemed to burn holes into my skull with their fierceness.
"OKAY!" I finally broke. "I wanted to come by and say hi really quickly because I live close by and I keep hearing all of these rumors but I know they can't be true because if they were then I'd be crazy and you'd be a vampire and I'd be dead by now because I'm annoying. I bet you're looking at me right now, thinking that anything would be better than having to listen to me blabber on like a complete physco. I can't stop though, you know? When I get all nervous I just start talking to people and I expect them to listen and it's totally selfish but it just spills out and-and-and-and... I WISH YOU'D MAKE ME SHUT UP NOW!"
I bit my lip and shut my eyes tight. I could feel the door slamming any second now... or... maybe not. I cracked my eyes open. He was still there, still staring at me. Was that a smile? No way! Instead of the deadly cold glare, there was a smile. It wasn't a normal smile, but it was a smile, at least.
"You're Azalea, right?" He asked. I was shocked. Not only because he knew my name, but because of his voice. It was a booming, clear sort of voice with some weird accent that was not expected from a 'vampire'. He'd spoken earlier, but I hadn't been paying much attention then.
"Yeah, how did you know?" I asked in a soft, whisper tone of voice.
"Don't ask such stupid questions, 'crazy girl'." He smirked and stepped toward me. I felt an unseen tension. Of course, you'd think I'd have stopped going on my gut by now.
"Well," I looked down the street. "I'd better get going before... before Halloween passes me by." I turned around and took my first step away from the strange(and truly frightening) boy. Suddenly, I felt a cold, sharp fingered hand lay across my shoulder. A tiny eep erupted from inside of me.
"That was rude." The hand's owner turned me around. "You didn't even ask my name."
All of my earlier excitement had vanished. Three things were going through my brain when I looked at his devilish smile. One, he was not normal. Two, that smile was not a good thing. Three, he made it from that door way to me too fast.
"Sorry." I said quickly. "Umm, what is your name?" I was desperate to leave now. It was a bad idea to have come here and I realized that now. Lesson learned. So, when would his hand be removed from my shoulder and when would he return to his home like the villains do in all movies when the heroine has learned her lesson?
"My name is Geraint Cross." His smile widened. "Would you like to come inside?" His grip on my shoulder tightened. I wanted to run. Run as fast as I could out of this horror story.
"N-No thank you." I could feel my heart begin to beat faster. "My mom would want me home soon."
Seconds ticked away slower than hours. The moments stretched onward like a never ending spiral. My heart raced as my mind tried to reason with my legs to move. It was like I wasn't in control anymore. I was being manipulated by him somehow. If not directly, then mentally. I should have been screaming 'this is not my parent' or something like that, Right? I mean, isn't that what every good little girl did when a stranger, because he was, in fact, a stranger, asked her into their home? I always did. So, what was diffrent?
"It's okay, you'll only be a moment." He smiled down at me. I guessed he was trying to act kind but the facade wasn't convincing enough for me.
"No, I really, really, really should be going." I attempted to step back. His grip only grew stronger. Lord, I thought in a silent prayer, where's my knight in shining armor when I need one?
"Azalea, are you afraid of vampires?" He whispered menacingly. Normally, I would have laughed and answered 'No way! Vampires are cool!'. I decided, though, that the best thing to do was to keep my silence. I stood there for the longest time, avoiding eye contact, before he started to get angry.
"Azalea, aren't you going to answer?" Ah, yes, and this was the part when my plan reeeeeeeeaaaaaaally backfired on my like a grenade.
"Yes, I am afraid of vampires..." I said. My voice had betrayed me, yet again, as it cracked. Geraint let out a laugh. Now, think of Count Dracula from the old time movies that were in black in white. It was sort of like that, though, not as funny because it was real and I was scared to death of this guy. I shut my eyes. Everything, I thought, everything, just go away! I could feel his breath against my neck. No!! Something sharp touched my skin. Help!!
Suddenly, there was a light against my eye lids. My eyes snapped open in surprise. Off in the distance, I could see the rising sun. Geraint shrank away from me. His eyes as gray and sharp as ever. Only darker now. As if he was telling me it wasn't the end. But it was for now.
