Chapter 1
Elize

The sun’s rays poured over my face, making me squint. I opened my silver eyes wide, so I could see where I was. I sat up, slowly taking in my surroundings. The plains were as beautiful as ever, the light green grass flowing, the flowers sprung to life, the tree swishing in the wind. The rivers relaxing sound calmed me down a bit. I looked down, trying to see where I had been sleeping. I was sleeping on a mossy rock. I quickly jumped up.

I quickly tried to get the moss off of my dress. My simple dark blue dress, my apron, were both covered in leafs and petals. The petals were probably from the trees, they were starting to blossom. I quickly cleaned them off, and hurried over to the river bank. I quickly looked at my reflection in the water, which was not good.

I quickly took some of the water in my hands, and poured it on my head, and flattened my chocolate brown hair. It was better after I finished. It was presentable. I hurried back over to the rock, and searched around it for my bag. It was small, but big enough for simple things. I finally found it behind where I had assumed where I was sleeping, and slipped it over my left shoulder, letting it hang on my right hip.

I ran over the plains, silently watching where I was going. You never knew where a snake could be. I spotted one, and turned to my left, until I could not see the slithery snake. I kept going forward, hoping that I would reach our small hut in just a few minutes. I sighed in relief as I saw our small house. It was indeed small, for it only had a room and a kitchen, and there were 5 people in my family, including myself. The wall on the outside had moss, in which I would have to clean off next week, and a battered door. The roof was leaking; my father would fix that, and was filled with birds.

I ran over to the house, waving my hands in the air, trying to scare the birds off. I only succeeded in scaring a few of the birds away. I stopped at the door. I got myself ready to be yelled at. I usually was yelled at by my step-mother, my father was never home, and usually my siblings were at school, or at a friend’s house. I don’t blame them, if I had that kind of freedom, then I would stay away from home as much as possible, but, that was impossible for me. I had work to do, as the eldest always does.

My mother had died when I was a simple 5 years old, from a fever. My mother had given birth to two twins before she died, my sister and brother, which left me as the head of the house. For, in our land, the women are always the head of the house, because the men are always at work. I walked into the house, holding my head up high, showing that I did not care if I got yelled at.

When I was not yelled at, I glanced over the kitchen, looking if my step-mother was there, she was. I was wondering why she was not talking. “I am sorry for being late, I accidentally fell asleep while I was watching some kids play” I murmured. My step-mother fidgeted. I guess she didn’t know I was there. “I do not care anymore. You seem to care more about being lazy than anything else. So, I decided that I would not yell at you anymore, and you can as you wish” she said, with annoyance in her voice. I scoffed. I did not believe her, I never did. Ever since she lied to me about how snakes do not bite, which was a nasty lie; which got me bitten, I never believed her. I walked over to a small chair, and sat down. I felt the chair tilt, and I shot up. I looked down at the chair, it looked completely fine. I sighed. “We need another chair” I said.

“Then, have Chloe get another one when she goes to school tomorrow” she simply said. I stared at her back, glaring knives at her back. I really had not reason to glare at her, I just felt like it. I always had, and probably always will. “Do you need me?” I asked, hoping she would say. I saw her shake her head, and perked up. “Send Garret for me when you need me back” I said, as I rushed out of our disgusting house. I don’t even think it was big enough to be called a house. I ran back to the mossy rock as fast as I could, and tripped.

I laughed as I felt the flowers pick at my skin, making me feel happy. It always made me feel happy when I was laying on the plains, the sweet air flowing everywhere, the flowers touching your skin, and leafs flying in the wind. I got up, and walked over to the river. I sat down, and pushed my feet into the cold depths of the river. I gasped from the touch of the cold river. I giggled about my nonsense and started to kick the water. It was a lot of fun, a lot of good memories on this river bank. I remembered my mother’s laugh, my laugh, my father’s hard laugh, and the faint gurgles my sister and brother were giving.

I looked up into the blue sky, looking for the usual cloud that I always looked for. There is was, the cloud shaped like a fox. The fox was always my spirit animal. In our small town, everyone had an animal spirit, and mine was a fox. My mother always said that I was as sly as a fox when I wanted to be. I felt a warm tear come down my face, and caught it with my pinky. I looked at the tear, like it was a never ending dream of water. I loved the water, and I sometimes believed that it loved me.

If I could, I would live in the water, for I loved it better than anything else. I soon noticed laughs of other children, and shadows forming on the other side of the river, next to the small dirt road. I didn’t look up; I never did when people were passing by. The shadows stopped in front of where I was. I heard a grunt, probably indicating that they wanted me to look up. I didn’t want any trouble, so I looked up reluctantly.

There was 3 kids around my age; which is 14, two boys and a girl. The girl was very beautiful, with her tan skin and blond curly hair. Her eyes were green, which went well with her green dress. The boys both looked a lot alike, probably twins. Both of them had shaggy brown hair, and tan skin, but they had different eye colors. One had brown eyes, and the other one had blue eyes. The blue eyed one was slightly taller, so I assumed he was the older twin. The girl was about my height.

The girl giggled and skipped over to the edge of the other side of the river bank. I watched her steps, watching to make sure she did not slip. The river bank was very slippery, and you could easily slip. She did not, which took a lot of skill on these river banks. It was very rare. Many kids had died drowning on these poor river banks, so nobody except me would go near them. It was usually an advantage for me. I quickly brought my thoughts back to the girl.

“Hi, I am Catherine, but my friends call my Cathy. What’s your name?” she asked, her voice was very small, but very calming. I scoffed. “What. Never heard of me. Well, I am Elize, the famous gold eyed girl.” I said sarcastically. Her cheeks turned red, probably from anger.

“How dare you act sarcastic in front of me, I know perfectly well who you are, but, you should know me as well” she nearly screamed. I stared at her for a second, and started to giggled. “You must be joking, right?” I asked. I laughed even harder as her face paled. “It’s no use. I can’t get through to her, maybe you guys should try” she said as she turned to the other boys. They both nodded, I could see sheer determination in the blue eyed boy’s eyes.

I grunted. “What are you talking about?” I asked, curiously. The brown eyed boy stepped forward as the girl stepped back. “I am Nelan. Do you recognize me?” he asked. I shook my head. “Why would I know you?” I asked. He shook his head in sorrow, and walked back to the dirt road, nodding his head to his supposed brother.

The blue eyed boy stepped up to the plate, which I thought was funny. “I am Mason. Please remember me” he begged. I shook my head sorrowfully. “I can see that this pains you, but I do not remember you” I said. The boy looked like he was near to tears. “Gwin was right. We have to take her to the Seer Witch” he said.

My eyes widened. I knew of the Seer Witch’s powers. The rumors say that she can do anything, and that is the only reason why people only come to her if necessary. You would not want to get on her bad side, fearing that she would turn you into a frog, or maybe even a bug. I gasped as I replayed what my step-mother had said, and jumped up. I ran back to the mossy rock. “Stay away from me!” I screeched.

They stepped forward. “We do not want to force you, but, you need to remember” Nelan said. I shook my head violently. “I do not wish to see the Seer Witch! I will not, and you cannot make me!” I screamed, as I started to run away. I didn’t dare look back, fear engulphing my thoughts. I tripped over a rock. I saw a shadow loom over my body, and screamed.

I felt warm arms wrap themselves around me, and turned my head slightly; so I could see who it was. It was my father. I cried harder and wrapped my arms around his waist and cried into his shirt. “Shh. It’s ok. It’s ok. I am here now” he whispered in my ear. When I finally calmed down, I looked into his hazel eyes. “Did I forget something?” I asked curiously. His eyes widened, and I knew I had gotten my answer.

“I guess I should pack, for I do not think they are giving up” I whispered as I got up. I heard my father growl as I started to walk back to our small home. “They will not take you away, I will make sure of that” he growled. I stared at him in astonishment. “Why? Is there something wrong with me regaining some memories?” I asked him carefully. He nodded his head. “Memories of your past were taken away for a reason, and you do not need them. Not yet” he said.

I shook my head. What were my lost memories about?
