Chapter 13
Crazy Things

We got out of our vehicles and everyone crowded around my Ford Mustang GT-R I had no idea what had happened and yet they still turned to me… why?

“Uh, Dave… do you have any idea what might’ve happened here?” Mari asked me.

“To tell all of you the truth, I have no idea… but maybe ma and pa could tell us.” I suggested.

“But what if what ever happened to the people happened to them too?” Alice pointed out.

“Well, we need to take that risk.” I told them. “Let’s go… everyone, stick together, I don’t want to lose anyone else.” I took the lead, followed by Alice, Ed, David, Mari, Emily and Yukai.

“Listen, maybe I should take the lead.” Alice suggested, “You even said--.”

I stopped, “Look…. Alice, I don’t what I’d do with myself if something happened to you… It’s my fault all this is happening, if I hadn’t wanted to go into that mansion we’d all be safe.”

“And if you hadn’t dragged us all up here we could be in the same boat as everyone else.” Yukai argued.

“Alright, fine… just try to keep it down, if something did do this it could still be around, and close.” I walked on slowly, trying to keep close to buildings and always being aware of my surroundings, we walked in single file. As we neared an intersection I halted with my back against the wall, trying to reveal as little of myself as possible I peeked out, one of the creatures I thought I saw in the mansion was devouring a corpse, I place a hand firmly over my mouth and tried to slow my breathing. I saw a puddle of blood beneath the creature; it was eating the body, bones and all… I looked on in horror as the thing finished its meal, with a loud crack I heard the body skull crumble and collapse…

“What was that?” Alice asked me. I didn’t answer but the creature did, it lifted up its head and began walking over toward us, I moved similar to a wolf. I noticed it had no eyes, I relied on sound and smell, it got closer to me, I moved as little as possible and it began sniffing at my leg behind the wall, when it tried to move its head closer it hit the wall, thank god these things are blind. After being startled like a blind dog it scurried off away from us.

I took my hand away from my mouth and exhaled in relief, I guided the others into an alley we passed a short ways from the intersection. “Okay, just to let you guys know, there’s some crazy shit going on here… the way I look at it, this is a fork in the road, those of you that want out and want to get back to your lives get back in your cars and look for a safe place… those of you that want to stay, come with me to the store, we need some walkie-talkies.”

“I’m staying with you.” Alice said first.

“Same goes for us.” Ed answered for him and David.

“I’m with them.” Mari spoke up.

“We all probably would’ve left if given the chance, truth be told we still don’t have that option. I’m in.” Yukai stepped in.

“He’s right, and we need to find out if what’s really going on in this town.” Emily said finally.

“Alright, guess we’re all staying then, from here on out we don’t give anyone time alone, someone has to be with you at all times, whether it be either me, Alice or Yukai, do you understand?”

“We’re all in Dave; by the way, what was that thing you were looking at anyway?” Alice asked.

“I don’t know how to describe what it looked like, kinda like a tall, skinny person that walked on all fours and had an enlarged head that extended into a snout… it behaved more like a blind wolf than anything else, from what I can tell they have no eyes… they rely on scent and sound.” I explained.

“Well, we should probably get going if we want to find shelter from those things.” Yukai pointed out.

“We just need to avoid open areas, all of you stay near the buildings.Alice, Ed and David stay on the right side of the street, Yukai, Emily and Mari on the left. I’ll be alone in the middle, ahead of you guys… any complaints?” I took charge, no one spoke up. “Alright, let’s go.” I said after a few moments of silence. We took our positions with me in the middle of the road, I moved cautiously forward, after a block of not seeing anything I began to feel more on edge, or more relaxed, it was hard to tell. Alice led the left side, she heard and saw nothing, Yukai was the same on the right. We neared another block, there was a shop with a large window out front on the left side of the road, I had thought there would be a trap but I stopped thinking that a few steps away from it, as I got closer I got more and more worried… when I finally was even with the wind I felt a string tug on my leg, it tied around my right shin and I was dragged to the shop and through the window, I hung upside down. “Just great, more cuts to worry, not to mention the blood rushing to my head.” I said trying to lighten the mood as I began feeling dizzy, my vision began to blur and the room started to spin.

The others rushed into the store to find out if I was okay. I just nodded, “What’s with the worried looks guys, I’m fine.” I said in a daze as the room slowed its spinning.

“You just got dragged through bullet proof glass, you are not fine.” Yukai chuckled as he tried to untie the rope around my leg.

“Uh, I’m pretty sure those things’ll be here soon… you guys should probably go.” I tried to tell them.

“We aren’t leaving you here to get eaten.” Alice argued as she looked for a knife to cut the wire.

I groaned, sighed and grunted as I struggled to stay awake, my eyes shut and I fell asleep.
