This is just a speedpaint/concept sketch of a character I made up named Pender. He's the orca here coming to see whats up with the drowning human there. Pender also has a human form (he's a shape-shifter) but I'm having trouble coming up with a design for him. I would much appreciate it if someone was willing to help?
Anyway, if you're interested, here's the story behind this picture (it's kinda long):
I was deep below the accident when it happened. I didn't see it but the crash was loud enough, my human ears could have picked it up from that distance. It was all too familiar, mankind trying to live amongst a world they didn't belong in, and failing miserably to conquer the domain that belonged my brothers and sisters. True, I was born among men, but I did not count myself as one of them. It is not something I can explain. Let's just say I belonged in their world as much as they did mine.
At least, that is how I thought before I heard that crash, before my curiosity drove me upwards toward the seen of the tragedy. I judged the sinking rubble to be the result of a collision between two vessels. I could see the mangled, burning hulls still barley floating at the surface. Silently I listened as I watched. I did not notice it at first, but there was a faint sound coming from the waters behind me. The quiet pulse of a human heart.
Beating its last soft thuds, I assumed, as I could not hear the creature thrashing or attempting to swim for the surface. I circled about and found her. A young female, sinking slowly under the weight of a long dress. "Let her drown." My dark thoughts seemed to echo in the equally dark water. "She deserves this fate."
But these were the thoughts of a Transient, any other orca race would have already saved the helpless thing, but we lone orcas tend to have a 'everyone for themselves' mindset.
Suddenly, the human opened her eyes, putting a pause on my consideration of her fate. She was face down, so I was the first thing that caught her attention. I expected fear to be there, in those silver-blue eyes. I expected to hear her weakening heart accelerate, but it didn't. I saw instead of fear, a certain deepness, longing perhaps? Before I could look closer, she turned onto her back and reached for the surface, but fell limp again.
I did here a pulse accelerate, but it was my own. A fear I couldn't explain pushed me toward the dying girl. I had to help her. In seconds, a bond had formed between this stranger and I. In seconds, my all-orca life had come to an end. I just hoped my flukes were fast enough to save hers...
