I have had this idea wrapped up for about 2-3 years and finally drew it in satisfactory way
Once a Keyblade warrior, he was defeated and became a canine heartless, his nobody also emerging. After a few years, the nobody and heartless fought each other in battle and accidentally merged, taking away all memory of their previous life but giving him his heart and soul back, along with the ability to use the Keyblade. He also found he now has the ability to manipulate the powers of darkness in his favor. The Heartless crest on his chest marks the wound that killed him.
