Don't Wait (Chp 8)
Sammy found the information and did what Ellius asked of her. The download was taking a while so she decided to look at some other things.
“Nothing important…” the fox sighed.
The device that was in the data port beeped and the green button blinked. Sammy checked the upload bar, it read “Done”. The fox wiggled the device out of the port and shoved it in her pocket. Sammy reached in her pants pocket and pulled out her cell phone and began to text Mitchie, Courtney and Bean.
“Alright, let’s blow this place up.” The text message read.
The fox walked out of the room nonchalantly.
******************************
Mitchie reached into her pocket and read her phone as Ellius walked into the room.
“Crap,” Mitchie grumbled.
“What?” Ellius asked. His focus was on something else in the room.
“Sam says she wants to blow this place up now. Is that okay?”
“Not yet. Let’s get this out of here and then we can blow it up. Tell her that.” The echidna said, thinking it over a bit.
“No need,” a voice sounded through the doorway.
Mitchie and Ellius gasped.
“I’m right here.” A certain fox said, walking to the two.
“Oh Sam! It’s you! We were worried you might’ve been someone else!” Mitchie sighed a sigh of relief.
“So,” Sammy started, “What am I looking at?”
There was a glass pod in the middle of the room, surrounded by high-tech monitors, wires, and such.
“It looks exactly like the beast’s anthropomorphic form…” Ellius pondered.
“Maybe this is what the Scientists based it off of,” Sammy said, walking up to the glass.
“I think you’re right Sammy,” Mitchie agreed, also stepping close to the pod.
******************************
Courtney had snuck off to check her phone, leaving Bean with the security guards.
“Oh man…” Courtney whispered as she looked at the newest text message from Sammy.
The bat walked back over to Bean and the security guards.
“Sorry boys, but we have to leave now. We’ve got a date with a hot place if you know what we mean,” Courtney winked at the men, and took Bean’s arm and left for the car.
“What’d you do that for?!” Bean asked irritably.
“They’re gonna blow that place up. Do you wanna get set on fire?” Courtney answered, getting into Sammy’s car in the alleyway.
******************************
Ellius pressed a few buttons on the keyboard.
“Looks like our suspicions were correct,” the echidna told the girls.
“I feel sorry for the poor thing… let’s get ’em out of there,” Sammy said sympathetically.
There was a pause.
“I can’t.” Ellius finally said.
“What do you mean you can’t?” Mitchie spoke up.
“It won’t let me. I keep trying to find a place for a password or a good place for me to hack but…”
Sammy walked over to the capsule and placed her hand on it.
“Oh shitake mushrooms…” Mitchie groaned. “Are you really gonna do that Sam?”
“Like Hell I am!” Sammy called back.
The fox pulled her hand back and thrust her fist forward with seemingly no power at all.
“That didn’t—“ Ellius was cut off by a sharp creak of glass.
“Oh really?” Sammy looked at him with a cocky smirk.
There were a few more creeks, and the glass shattered, triggering an alarm system.
“Damn… Ellius! Grab him and let’s get!” Sammy commanded.
Sammy ran back to the computer.
“Sam!” Mitchie called, “What are you doing! We have to get outta here!”
“If I’m right, I’ll be able to activate a self-destruct mechanism from here while you two escape!”
Ellius looked back, “But you’ll be…”
“Go!!” Sammy yelled at them, “I’ll be fine! I’ll meet you back at the car! But take this.”
Sammy threw a data-filled device to Mitchie and she caught it.
“Just in case... But just go.”
The echidna and raccoon left the room with no other words, leaving Sam to deal with the self-destruction.
“Alrighty, let’s get started Sammy…” the fox said, cracking her knuckles.
******************************
Ellius, Mitchie, and a new possible ally finally regrouped by the car.
“Where’s Sam?” Bean asked.
A couple of blocks behind them, an enormous explosion could be heard and seen.
“No… No! Mitchie! You didn’t let her… you didn’t let her set it off and tell you she’d be okay did you!?” Courtney screamed.
Mitchie looked down, ashamed of herself.
“At least we still have the Data Retriever.” Ellius said, trying to lighten up the mood.
The echidna put the anthropomorphic body on his should on the group, propping his up with the side of the car.
“I think we should have a moment of silence for the fox that died nobly for the sake of our future…” Mitchie said, closing her eyes and keeping her head low.
