Once Upon A Time I Was Ten Years Old

Once upon a time I was ten years old

I looked out night time’s window, I was very bold

I wished upon a star for the clouds to come

Turn the blistering heat to the winter’s cold

And the very next day, I stepped outside

When my pretty blue eyes opened up all wide

My white petticoat was caught in the wind

It picked me up, blew me as I breathed in

The fresh summer’s air which I found so fair

Flowery scents whirling through the air

A child’s imagination floating everywhere

Cardinals and sparrows sing without a care

Why can’t life stay the same just like this forever?

Why can’t life never change, stay like this forever?

Painting pictures in my mind, while I’m blissfully blind

Of all the world’s hurt, of the future, of time

Can I stay in this place, floating through space

With the stars and the planets in their celestial grace

Can I crawl underground with the dirt and the worms

And the ants and their queens in their kingdom so green

Run away from the spider, who is oh so mean

And never go back to my room to clean

Why can’t life stay the same just like this forever?

Why can’t life never change, stay like this forever?

Singing with the stars during nights so cold

Wishing for adventure, never coming home

Drifting over mountains and their cold grey stone

Watching over trees and their hard brown bone

Once upon a time I was ten years old

I wished upon a star on a night so cold

As my mind grew foggy and my eyes fell closed

And the very next day, as I awoke

I ran down the stairs, to my mother I spoke

I told her of my travels far beyond the sea

And she told me, with slight pity it was but a dream.
