This is for Will A. Sanborn (he's a writer-friend of mine); I know he uses a raccoon in his Livejournal icon pics, so that's what I drew. I think I've only ever drawn, oh, maybe 5 raccoons my whole life, and I didn't have a reference in front of me, so hopefully you can tell it's a 'coon. I'm sure there are inaccuracies!

BTW: I know the glasses are kinda impossible, but when I constructed something more elaborate (like with "arms" on the glasses) it just looked... weird. So, I fully admit I cheated things. When doing the fur I tried to keep in mind what I'd read in an "animal textures" book I'd bought, though I was going for more of an old-fashioned illustration look. Also, though I LOVE to see all different kinds, this is more of the way I draw anthropomorphic animal art when I'm drawing for myself - mostly animal but (hopefully) with a bit of a personality, somewhat akin to Beatrix Potter (but nowhere near her level, goodness no).

I hold my pen funny; maybe I should have looked at how someone ELSE holds their pen when drawing this. Will's right-handed in real life, too; and I wish I'd had a good photo reference of raccoon paws when I did this, because I don't like the way the paw-hand came out.

Incidentally, the pencil/RSVP pen drawing is done on a small, cream-colored response card; I had a bunch left over from when I printed our wedding invitations. It takes pen and pencil well, it's easy to hide when I draw at lunch, and it's easy to mail (I already have the envelopes) so expect more of these "thank you" sketches to you artists in the future. *looks out at you all*

Wow.

Looks like a racoon ta me. ;) 'Course, the few I've seen in person tend to be running away from my flashlight... Well, there was that one in the shopping center, but the streetlamp was out so he just went along eatin' acorns in the dark while I sat and watched him from a good twenty feet away.

Where was I? Oh, right. Nice pic, even if it is a bit... 'Fanciful.' ;)

Love the face and the shading. Looks like one happy coon.
