Sayonara Yesterday

The day fades away

And before it can completely cease,

the breeze sifts through all the trees

Picking a leaf here, and there,

leaving some trees all but completely bare

The leaves are symbolic of past memories;

They are old; shriveled, but not dead

These used to be new, green; fresh

But time passed, and they aged

Gradually, but not fully forgotten

They mingle with the dust, the dirt

They break down into specific moments in time;

a single breath in a long life

These are buried deep underground,

but they will never completely fade away;

They will always be

Our memories are like leaves on a tree. They grow and unfurl into a fresh and new thing. Every crease can be seen and remembered; the leaf is completely open. As time passes, the leaf will start to furl again; hiding parts of it. The color will turn dark and brown, and as it falls from our conscious minds, a new leaf will replace it. It will still be near you, that remnant of a memory. But as days pass, it will be covered with more recent (and yet still fading) memories. Soon it will be buried deep underground. It will be hard to remember the features that you once knew so well; and although the memory is old, shriveled, and damaged, it will never completely cease. It will break down and blend with other memories, but it is still there and it always will be.

This is so sweet and tender. Do you know Megumi Ogata's "Kyou no Sayonara, Mirai no Hajimare"? It's a song I was used to like when I was little.
