It's a trap!
Except kind of not really.
Kiri is a character from Emperyan and a villager from a strange place in which nothing born there starts out with a gender. Rather, they develop their gender at 13. At the age of eight, the rather boyish Kiri moved away from the village to live with it's father, who wanted a girl. He forced Kiri away from boyish things so that when the time came, it's gender would choose to be female.
About ten years later, her old friend comes to the capital, however, she doesn't recognize him- mainly because her once girly friend seems to have become a boy.
Oh gods genderbending is fun.
