!!!OBJECTION!!!

xD *giggle* I feel happier now that I've said that.

Okay! So this is what I've been working on the last two days. I normally don't sprite because it's tiring and I would much rather just do normal artwork, but something weird has come over me and I just HAD to do this! I'm at the last case in PW2, and I'm on the edge of my seat! Plus, with a few of my friends talking about spriting more and more, I'm kind of getting back into the groove of it. Kinda.

Now, one thing I want to point out to you all is that I USED BASES! Why did I use bases when I normally scratch? I dunno, really. I think there was something I was trying to prove with all this, but I really can't place it anymore. Maybe I was trying to show my progression from edits into scratch work or something. These are admittedly edits, meaning I'm not trying to hide anything about using a base. As you can see, though...the last one doesn't even slightly resemble its base anymore. There is a progression here, and it's important for people to realize that scratching comes from really really good edits done consistently. Eventually, you'll make it into scratching if you just stick with it!

I need to clear one thing up before I break it down for you all.

NO FRANKENSTEINING OCCURRED
That means I used the base that I show here and that was ALL I used, aside from artwork refs from the Pheonix Wright games, of course. I'd be stupid not to see what the characters looked like before trying to sprite them. Know that I never once took a piece of another sprite, copied it, then pasted it into place on these sprites. I just don't do that unless I'm REALLY in a jam.

Breaking Them Down

Maya Fey-----As you can see, the first sprite I made, Maya Fey (first one on the left), came from Nakoruru. In my opinion, she did not turn out very well at all. Nevertheless, here she is. Minor to moderate editing, scratched beads and magatama, scratched hand. Compared to what I know I can do, this is amateur stuff. I will redo her later so that her spunky, thieving nature shines through.

Pheonix Wright-----Sprite in the middle, spike-for-brains. Compare the bases and you'll notice first thing that the entire body on Ryo's sprite was scrapped. I didn't use his gi or pants or hands. Literally, I erased everything below his head. The hair is pretty iconic of Ryo, I hear, so it remains the "fatal flaw" of this edit. Please do pay special attention to his hand, though! =D I'm so excited that I sprited his hand going "OBJECTION!"

Mia Fey-----Please look closely at her. I'm very proud of this one, because you know what? This one is 95% all scratch. In the beginning, I used Morrigan's sprite. I started changing colors, fiddling with the shape of the eyes, coloring in the clothing so it would be all black/dark gray like Mia's clothing, and then I erased Morrigan's hands, wings, and ear things. Shaping of the hair came next, then a new mouth, then the very delicate process of making the front of her suit. I thought everything was going well, but then I saw the magatama and scarf. I had to make them from nothing, and then I decided to give her a very well-known pose of hers--crossed arms. Let me tell you, that was a job! Her crossed arms are all scratch, though, and in fact, by now, most everything on her IS. I believe in a sense of honor as a spriter, though, so I am telling you all straight out that this sprite of Mia Fey did have a base, and that I did edit that base and add the scratched parts I needed in order to complete her. The next one I make may very well be 100% scratch, no base used at all. I'm not sure, though.

****

I hope you have enjoyed looking at my tiny sprites here. Maya took 30 minutes, Pheonix took an hour and a half, and Mia took a whopping 3 hours. The next one...I certainly hope it doesn't take four. I plan to make Miles Edgeworth, Fanzsiska Von Karma, Detective Dick Gumshoe, Pearl, and Ronnie & Dessie DeLite (I LOVE those two!). Let me think...were there any other extremely memorable characters...? Suggestions are welcome!

Rosencruez Says:

Well, if you're going to do more, I suggest adding Iris to the list.

Wedge McCloud Says:

TAKE THAT!

Pheonix Wright is #1 on my list of games to get if I ever obtain a DS and it's so cool seeing these sprites in... this style. (What game do these sprites look like? I love this style, but I can't identify it.) These sprites are really good.

Wright's "OBJECTION" point is fantastic. Honestly, it's amazing that it's scratch. It looks really good. Mia Fey's sprite... floored me, to be honest. I saw hers first and didn't quite realize why Morrigan was above her until I saw the other two and noticed they were the bases. Geez, Morrigan's jawline is probably the only thing the same.

Whoo. I'd love to Edgeworth and Karma. They're two of my favorites, even though I haven't played the games.

Iris Angel163 Says:

Awesome! I haven't played Phoenix Wright yet.*dun dun DUN!*O_O These are all so awesome!

RenMan Says:

Objection!

Now that I got that out of my system... *ahem* Very nice job on the Phoenix Wright sprites. They look official, as if they were done along with the rest of the Neo Geo sprites! Even the shading matches perfectly.

Heh, it would be pretty frickin' awesome if Phoenix Wright had his own fighting game. Phoenix Wright: Ace Brawler...

Feadraug Says:

You really made an AWESOME job with them, specially Phoenix's hand and hair and Mia... Mia, overall, she's incredibly well done, no one would guess you used Morrigan as a base.

Guess I should make better NGP portraits, comparing yours with mine. Still, that's all practice and experience what we're talking about.
