Between Black and White: Broken Hearted Dreams Chapter 9

Between Black & White: Broken Hearted Dreams
Chapter 9: Showing Off

A new week of school had begun for Blaze and everyone else. For Blaze that morning was a bit different from the start to every other day at his new school so far. To start the day off this time around Blaze had a class in the gym, physical education.

Blaze headed down the hall toward the large double doors of the gym. Sara was in his class yet he didn’t stop to wait for him, that was just how Blaze was. He still didn’t trust her completely. Louis wasn’t there with them, he had gym on a different day of the week.

Sara didn’t understand why Blaze didn’t trust her. She knew that everyone had looked down on him which must have been hard on him. Although she really did want him to trust her, she wanted him to consider her a friend.

At that time she was heading down the same hall as Blaze. She could see him up ahead although he was walking too fast and was too far ahead already for her to catch up with him easily.

All the night before she couldn’t get what she had learned about earlier that day at Jasmine’s house. She wasn’t a shade yet Jasmine and Torque both tied her in with Blaze and Louis. Blaze knew that he was different and that he was a shade himself. Wouldn’t she know as well if she had some special gift that nobody else had? This worried her, what if there was something else that she wasn’t seeing. What if she’d missed something her entire life?

“Blaze!” She called out at last. She had to get her mind off of it. Maybe more then anything she wanted to ask Blaze about it, he knew more about shades then her. After all he was a shade himself.

Blaze stopped, he was already only a few feet from the large double doors at the end of the hallway. He turned his head just enough to see Sara rushing in his direction from the other end of the hall, from where he had originally come from.

It didn’t take Sara long to manage to catch up to where he was standing. Something was different, and Blaze noticed right away. The smile he had grown so accustomed to seeing on Sara’s face wasn’t present. Her mind was still elsewhere. She wanted to get her mind off of the information she learned the day before although part of her wanted to know what Blaze thought on the matter.

“Something wrong?” He noticed right away and wasn’t afraid to point it out as he took another step toward the door leading to the gym where the rest of the students in their class had begun to gather.

“No, it’s nothing.” Sara responded as she pushed her worries aside. The serious look she had on her face a second before was replaced by the usual smile which Blaze was used to seeing, her usual carefree face.

The two of them pushed through the two large doors together. Of course as soon as Blaze stepped into the room he attracted the attention of everyone of the other students already in there. Blaze noticed as soon as he entered the gym that the rest of him classmates were dressed very differently. Dressed in clothes that were much more loose then the clothes they would usually wear. Many of them were dressed in shorts which weren’t exactly normal for the climate in the area.

Blaze glanced over towards Sara noticing that she was dressed in a very similar way. In a loose white tee shirt and a pair of light blue colored shorts. Blaze was still dressed in his usual clothing, he didn’t realize he was meant to dress differently not that he would have dressed anything like them even if he had known.

Most of his other classmates had all gathered in a large group at one side of the gym. On the other side against the wall sat a long line of gray colored bleachers. There was nobody in that area and Blaze realized this as he started to walk straight in that direction. The eyes of the others were still locked on the two of them as Sara continued to follow him.

Blaze sat in the first row of the bleachers, he leaned forward looking down towards the floor. The stares from the other side of the large room had finally subsided and they had all gone back to whatever it was they were talking about before they came in.

Sara didn’t sit. She instead stood right in front of Blaze. He noticed this when he saw here feet there. He slowly looked up towards her. He was soon greeted by her smile, the smile he had grown used to seeing. In his mind he still didn’t understand why she stayed by him and continued to try to make him like her when he was always so cold towards her and everyone else for that matter.

“Why is it that you’re always in such a good mood?” Blaze spoke up and asked her, it was something he couldn’t figure out for quite some time. She wasn’t much different from him. Everyone looked down upon her as well yet she still always seemed to have a positive outlook at all times. Maybe it was just around him, he couldn’t exactly be sure unless she were to tell him herself.

By this time Sara was grinning ear from ear as she finally turned to sit down next to Blaze on the bleachers. “What reason do I have not to smile?” She asked as she glanced over towards him only to notice that his gaze had gone back to the floor where she had been standing a second before.

“It’s just weird, that’s all.”

Sara looked away from him at this comment although the smile didn’t leave her face and from what Blaze could tell from looking at her out of the corner of his eye, it even seemed to widen. “You’re one to call someone weird.” Sara remarked after about twenty seconds of complete silence between the two of them.

Blaze could see exactly what she meant by this. He wasn’t one to be able to call anybody weird since he himself was a little on the unusual side. Of course Sara could understand his view of the world yet she wanted to change him, to make him trust again. Trust was the one thing that in his mind was what he believed was the one thing that he couldn’t risk.

By this time a man had entered through another door near the back of the gym. The other students at the opposite side of the room had all begun to gather around this man. He was hard to see from where Blaze was sitting yet he could tell that this man would be about the same height as him although he appeared to have a much more athletic build to him. He was dressed much like the other students in a pair of gray shorts and a white tee shirt with Stone High written across the front of it.

Sara had also turned his attention to this man although she made no move to head in his direction. Instead he had started to head in the direction of where Blaze and Sara were seated. It didn’t take him long to reach them and finally come to a stop in front of Blaze. Sara had quickly gotten to her feet once again once the man had finally reached them.

“Well then you must be Blaze.” The man’s voice was booming and much louder then that of everyone else Blaze had grown accustomed to. Blaze looked up towards the man noticing an odd grin on his face at that time. He was in fact around the same height as Blaze much like he could tell from there.

“Yes, he’s Blaze.” Sara was the one to answer for Blaze after a few seconds of no reply from the black haired boy still unmoved from the seat he had taken.

The man turned to face Sara this time. “Ah, Sara.” He finally acknowledged her sitting there as if he hadn’t noticed her until just then. “I see that you’ve already made a friend, Sara’s a good kid.” He continued by turning his attention back to Blaze once again.

At this he started to turn and head back towards the large group of students at the other side of the gym. Blaze had already noticed that fact that they had all turned their attention in their direction when the man headed that way.

“Who’s he?” Blaze finally spoke up as he looked up towards Sara who was still standing watching the man head back to the other students.

Sara turned to Blaze once the man rejoined the group. “He’s our coach. He handles all of the athletic teams here as well as all gym classes.”

By that time chatter between the coach and the other students had begun back in the group. Neither Blaze nor Sara could hear what was being said at the time however coach soon turned to look in their direction. “Blaze! Let’s see what you got!” His voice boomed from the other side of the gym as he motioned for Blaze to come over. The rest of the students around him seemed a little skeptical and some even seemed to take a step back and way.

Blaze wasn’t sure what it was that he wanted from him although he slowly began to get to his feet and head in the direction of the group leaving Sara there by herself. Sara fell back onto the bleachers again. She said nothing as she watched Blaze heading.

The coach turned back to the crowd again looking over each of the students in the group. “How about you May.” He called out to a girl near the very back of the group. The girl started to head through to the front of the group. She had long brown hair that went about halfway down her back. Her eyes were a hazel color and she was dressed very much the same as everyone else.

By that time Blaze had reached where the coach was although he kept his distance from the crowd. As soon as the girl had reached where they were both standing the coach started to lead them out towards the side of the gym where on the floor there was a large circular track leading the full length around the room.

“May, you should already know the rules but for you Blaze let me explain.” The coach spoke up after lining the two of them up side by side near a line along the track labeled start.

“I got it, it’s a race.” Blaze spoke up cutting him off. It wasn’t hard to figure out what it was that he wanted them to do.

“You got it.” The large man replied as he finally hurried out of the way and back over to the other students who had moved towards the middle of the room now. Sara was still sitting on the bleachers just to the side of the track on the opposite side of the gym.

Blaze stood with his arms crossed over his chest on the starting line while the girl only about a foot to his side had taken more of a prepared position as she put one foot forward ahead of her inclining her body forward slightly.

“You know, you don’t stand a chance of winning.” The girl spoke up glancing over towards Blaze.

“Oh, that so?” Blaze questioned.

“Not like that at least.” The girl added.

Blaze considered this as a challenge which was one thing that was always known to get to him. His arms lowered to his side at this as he took a position similar to her. He put one foot forward taking a lean. He wasn’t exactly dressed for running not quite as she was however he had confidence that he could easily win.

“Go!” The voice of the coach boomed over all else in the room and it was at that moment that Blaze and the girl both took off running at full speed forward.

For a second it seemed as though she had taken a lead over Blaze however not for long as Blaze seemed to double his speed and quickly passed her right by. She tried to pick up the pace as well however it wasn’t nearly enough to get anywhere close to Blaze.

For those watch the race many of them had gone wide eyed by the fact that by the time the girl made it about one-forth of the way around Blaze was already easily halfway around.

She was already breathing and panting heavily, there was no way for her to keep up with Blaze he was no more then a blur in front of her eyes.

Blaze on the other hand hadn’t even broken a sweat and was still going at the same amazing speeds that he had right from the start. The truth was he could have gone much faster and ended things much earlier. However he opted not to.

The students and coach near the center of the gym weren’t the only ones in shock and awe by the speed at which he was running. Both the eyes and mouth of Sara had opened wide as Blaze finally passed by where she was sitting. She was barely able to distinguish from him due to the fact that he was moving at such high speed. To her eyes he appeared as only a blur, a black colored blur.

The line where they had started had started to come into view for Blaze. However the long black haired girl had only passed the halfway point of the race at that time as Blaze easily crossed the finish line. He started to slow at that point until he finally came to a stop a few feet away from the starting line.

No sound had come from those at the center of the room, no sound except for the sound of the feet of the two runners hitting the floor beneath them.

As soon as Blaze came to a stop Sara jumped to her feet and began to run over to him even though the race wasn’t officially over yet as the black haired girl was yet to cross the finish line. Sara ran straight across the center of the gym passing right through the crowd of people and coach and heading to where Blaze was standing.

As Sara approached him Blaze turned to face her. Sara had a huge grin on her face when she finally came to a stop in front of him. “That was amazing!” She exclaimed as she looked up towards him grinning ear from ear.

It was then that the second of the runners finally crossed the finish line. She was breathing heavily and gasping for breath. This didn’t stop her for stepping right up to Blaze shoving Sara right out of the way. “How did you do that?” She questioned taking another deep breath of air. “That shouldn’t even be possible.”

Blaze gave her no response as Sara stepped between her and Blaze once again. This time Blaze was facing the girl instead. “Don’t be a sore loser May.” Sara spoke up as the girl took a step back away from the two of them.

“My name is Maydix, not May.” She spoke up with her eyes narrowed in Sara’s direction. Maydix then began to turn and walk away from the two of them.

Blaze took a step passed Sara and towards May at that time. “Regular logic doesn’t apply to me.” Blaze spoke up loudly in order to insure that she heard him. Maydix stopped and glanced back towards Blaze only to see him and Sara walking off together once again. The two of them were heading back towards the bleachers on the other side of the room.

That left Maydix with even more questions in mind. What did he mean by logic doesn’t apply?
