Between Black and White: Broken Hearted Dreams
Chapter 8: Shade

“So, you’re a shade as well Torque?” Blaze was the one to speak up and break the silence which had fallen over the large entrance way to the home of Jasmine where the five of them had remained since they had arrived. Torque had informed them only a second before that Jasmine wasn’t the only one with shade powers as he was in fact a shade as well.

Sara was still a bit in the dark over the entire discussion. What exactly was a shade? What did it even have to do with her? She didn’t know the answers to any of the questions rushing through her mind. She soon realized that she was the only one there who was left in the dark over the entire matter.

“Yes, the best explanation of my power would be that my eyes have the ability to read the true essence of people.” The power that Torque had was bit more difficult to describe. The explanation which he gave didn’t exactly tell what his power truly was. The truth was he could see many things about a person including, emotion and physical status like pain and other ailments of the body.

Torque often used these powers for his own personal gain however. It would have been impossible for him to become known as the champion of Stone High without an edge on the competition. That edge was none other then the fact that he was a shade. With this he was able to locate the weaknesses of anyone who challenged him. Whether those weaknesses were some kind of physical injury or weakness or an emotional one.

This was most likely what Louis had been speaking of giving Blaze the feeling that Louis had already known about Torque however he still seemed surprised. Of course that could have been an act or maybe by cheated, Louis was talking about something completely different all together.

“Not to interrupt or anything, but what exactly is a shade?” It was then that Sara finally spoke up. Both Jasmine and Torque looked to each other and then to Sara.

Blaze knew that they were doing every single time the two of them made eye contact. Jasmine had the ability to read minds, Torque’s mind. They would use this to transmit secret messages to each other. Of course Jasmine couldn’t send messages back to Torque however it did work in the reverse. Blaze didn’t exactly know what kind of secret messages they could be however he knew that it was going on.

“Well, I guess that you can say that a shade is someone a little different from normal everyday people.” Torque said glancing in the direction of the small blond haired girl standing near the back of the room. “They usually have some sort of special ability, or unique physical feature.”

“Like my eye.” Blaze added giving Torque’s explanation a little more substance.

Torque looked in the direction of the black haired male. He was yet to see the eye himself although Jasmine had told him of it.

It was obvious that Sara was still confused. That had answered the question of what a shade was but still left the question of how it related to her as a blank. “What exactly does this have to do with me?” She finally spoke up after looking back and forth between them for about half a minute.

“That’s not the important part here.” Jasmine was the one to speak that time. She had told both Blaze and Louis about the fact that they were two of the three whose minds she couldn’t read. The third of course standing in the room along with them. “My shade gives me the ability to clearly read the thoughts of other by looking into their eyes. However the three of you are the only ones whose minds I can’t read.” This statement was of course directed at Blaze, Louis, and Sara although none of them knew much more then she did.

Blaze didn’t get it at all. He could see himself being a bit of a problem as his eye was different from that of others creating the possibility that it could block the use of her shade. There was also the fact that he always kept his left eye covered over. He didn’t know the rules attached to the use of her power thus leaving the possibility that she needed to look into both eyes in order for it to work. Then again he had shown her what he referred to simply as ‘The Eye’ before and he figured that she was still locked out of his mind then as well.

“I noticed it too.” After a few seconds of hesitation Toque finally opened his mouth to speak. “I had noticed an odd sort of energy coming from Louis already but now that you’re all here…” He stopped and swallowed as he looked over the three of them one at a time. “The light within Sara and Louis are very similar but as for Blaze…” He stopped, he couldn’t even find the words to express what he could feel pouring out from deep inside of the very core of the tall black haired boy.

Both Sara and Louis had been struck speechless and unsure of the new developments. Blaze didn’t care either way however. So what if they were different? He never cared about fitting in before that and he never did.

“Sorry, you lost my interest.” Blaze stated coldly as he started to turn back towards the door. Nobody moved except for Blaze who had started to open the front door once again.

The door slowly closed as Blaze vanished to the other side of it. Before the door had closed entirely Sara raced over towards it pushing it open. “I’m coming with you Blaze.”

The door finally closed and both of them were gone. Jasmine, Louis, and Torque stood in silence their eyes fixed on the door.

Sara and Blaze walked side by side up the street. No real destination in mind although they both need to clear their minds. Sara more then Blaze of course as this was all new information to her. Before that meeting she had never known there was anything even close to shades. Of course she knew about his eye but she didn’t think much of it. She didn’t think about what it really was and the truth was she actually did think it was cool as she would say. Unique would be a better word to describe it though.

Back at Jasmine’s house however there was actually more to be said about the matter. It was something Blaze should have heard himself although Louis knew that trying to make him stay would have been impossible. He did what he wanted when he wanted and had always been like that. Always.

“I think I could explain the difference in me and Blaze, although I don’t know anything about Sara.” Louis wasn’t sure if he should tell them. They had noticed a difference meaning they would continue to look into it and maybe learn the truth about them someday on their own meaning it would have just been easier to tell them. He had to make sure that none of it got back to Blaze though. Blaze wasn’t ready to know his true identity or of the true darkness which slept within him.

As soon as he spoke the attention of both Jasmine and Torque were turned back to him and away from the door.

“You see, there are beings with far more developed powers then of shades. These beings fall into two major classifications…”

Louis told the two of them everything he knew about the true power which the two of them held. He told them exactly what ‘The Eye’ was and why Blaze had it. Of course he kept out some of the details related to Blaze’s past. The details which he was forbidden from telling anyone.

Okay so I wasn't planning to start posting these here just yet but you know what, screw it. This is the eight chapter of my long running fiction series over at my Creative Notes Production blog titled Between Black & White. If you want to read the first seven chapters then you can check them out over there by clicking, <url=http://creativenotesp.blogspot.com/>here</url>. I would love for you to let me know what you think of my writing style and what I could do to improve it since I simply love writing. So enjoy and I really hope you like it and also note I will be posting all future chapters here from now on as well.

Oh and don't mind the crappy preview image, I threw that together real quick in MSPaint and I'll be making something a bit more fancy for future chapters once I get around to it.
