Experimentation
The drink was cool in my hands, but warmed my insides and made me giggle. Normally I didn't drink, but tonight wasn't about me. I would party.
"Rachel?"
I turned and the room spun pleasantly. "Hey, Des," I smiled. Her ex-girlfriend popped up behind her and my good mood vanished. I wasn't gay, far as I knew, but I hated what she'd done to Des. I didn't see why she had to be here tonight. "Nita," I said, nodding once. I polished off my drink and stood.
"Let's dance," I said, grabbing Des's hands.
Des frowned. "You hate dancing, Rache."
I stumbled. "Do I?" Did I? I couldn't remember. All I knew was the beat was pulsing around me, and I wanted to move with it. I pulled her out onto the floor, relishing the feel of her close to me. The glowsticks around her wrists and neck made swirling trails, reminding me of her eyes. Pretty honey-brown eyes, shining in the dark... God, she was so beautiful. I wondered how well she kissed...
"Rachel, are you drunk?" Des pushed lightly on my shoulders and I had trouble keeping my balance.
I shook my head, feeling mildly dizzy. "Didn't drink much." Okay, dizziness gone. I wanted to dance more.
Des sighed. "Yeah, you're drunk..." She pulled me into the bathroom and locked the door behind us. "You were supposed to be there for me tonight," she said. "I thought I could count on you, you know? Support me." Her eyes glistened, and I frowned. Why did she look like she was about to cry? "You know I can't deal with Nita on my own, after how she fucked me over."
"But I'm here," I said.
"No, you're hitting on me." Tears made soft trails down her face.
I just wasn't brave enough before. How did I say it, tell her that this had been coming? I wasn't that drunk. I lunged forward, wrapped my arms around her, and kissed her. She relaxed for a moment, even kissed back. Then she shoved me away, the tears running faster.
"Damn it, Rachel..." Des turned and left.
What had I done?
