Fred

This is Fred. Fred is a coffee addict. He is 33 years old, and is single. He owns a dog named Severus and a cat named Balrog. Fred is a fantasy nerd. Fred drinks twenty cups of coffee a day. He first started drinking coffee when he began work for tech support at a computer company. He worked the graveyard shift, from 11 pm to 8 am. He fell asleep his first night there, missing almost a dozen calls. Thankfully he wasn’t fired, and he turned to coffee to help him stay alert.

It wasn’t much at first, a few sips now and then when he was on the job. But soon he started drinking more and more, drinking a whole cup after he woke up in the late afternoon. He would arrive to work awake and energized. And as the high began to fade he drank another cup. And another.

But it soon backfired on him. Callers couldn’t understand his instructions because he gave them too fast. His employer said that he was just too happy all the time. Some distressed callers grew angry at his tone because they felt that he was laughing at their pain. And when he went home he couldn’t get to sleep right away. He’d inadvertently drink a cup of coffee as he watched TV, waiting to fall asleep. When he did sleep he wouldn’t sleep for long, only a few hours. But that didn’t matter, because he had coffee.

So I've been attending a writer's group consisting of a group of my friends. We meet every Saturday at Starbucks to hold discussions and complete writing exercises we find in various books to help us develop our writing. I figured I should start posting them here.

For this exercise we were supposed to describe a person who drinks at least 10 cups of coffee a day. And so Fred was born.
