Legend of Zelda: ES chapter 4
Chapter four: Shadows of the Past
Later that day, after school......
"So," says Link, "school is over?" "For today anyway." says Zelda, "However, the day is not over yet. I have something else I have to do today." "And that would be?" says Link. "Kendo practice." says Zelda, "The way of the sword. I'm fairly good at it too. Top of the class, with no equal." "Well then," says Link, "let's go. I also studied some kendo myself. I would like to see how they teach it in this time period." "Really?" says Zelda, "Well then, maybe I should see how much you know." "Zelda..." says Link, "It's ok if I call you Zelda until we get there right?" "Right," says Zelda, "I guess..." "You see," says Link, "It's about your ears. They're... shorter than a normal Hyrulian's." "I guess it's because of my mom." says Zelda, "From what little I know, her ears were not as long as a normal person's either."
"What do you mean by that?" says Link. "You see..." says Zelda, "She.... died. I was only three at the time, so I barely remember her at all." "I'm sorry to hear that." says Link, "Forget I ever brought it up." "You don't need to apologize." says Zelda, "I don't know why, but I feel comfortable telling you about her."
Moments later, at the kendo academy......
"Good afternoon Sensai Darunia." says Zelda. Link looks at the goron standing infront of him. He had never seen a goron wear armor before, or even such an amount of clothing. "Uh.... Good afternoon sir." he manages to say. "You must be the exchange student that's living with Ze here." says Darunia, "Tell me, how much to you know of the way of the sword?" "I have studied kendo before." says Link, "I know the basics, as well as a few advance techniques." "Good." says Darunia, "Then you won't mind if I set up a sparing practice with Ze?" "Are you sure about this?" says Link. "Don't be such a wuss." says Zelda as she puts on her Bōgu. "I told you before, I can take care of myself." She hands Link a Shinai. "Come on. It will be fun." Link looks at the Shinai in his hand. Reluctantly, he agrees.
Moments later, he finds himself facing Zelda in a Kendo sparing match. "Don't even think of holding back on my regard." says Zelda, "Becasue I'm not going to." Link was a little off balance. He didn't want to raise a sword against Zelda. But here, he might not have a choice. "Now...." says Darunia, "BEGIN!"
Before he even had time to react, Link felt Zelda's Shinai strike him in the gut. Link was astounded. Zelda was extremely fast, and extremely strong too. Faster and stronger than a normal hyrulian should be. "Point to Ze." says Darunia, "Next round, ready..... BEGIN!" Link knew that Zelda was serious. She rushes up for another attack. Link barely manages to block it. He then tries to follow up with an attack, only to be blocked by Zelda's quick reflexes. Barely able to keap up, Link manages to block Zelda's attacks. Until........
"Point to Link." says Darunia. Link was able to find an opening in Zelda's attacks to land a blow. However, Zelda would have hit him if he didn't dodge at the last second. He had never faced someone as skilled as her before. "All tied up." Darunia continues, "Next point wins. Ready.... BEGIN!" Link knew he had to use every last bit of skill he had if he was going to win. For a little bit, he did well. It seemed that he and Zelda were evenly matched. But, as he went in for the winning blow, Zelda managed to dodge his attack with lighting fast speed. In that second, he knew. She was holding back earlier in the match. But now, she wasn't fooling around. Before he could even try to defend himself, Zelda hit him with the finishing blow. "Final point, and match to Ze." says Darunia, "Well done, both of you."
Later on, after kendo practice.....
Link and Zelda were walking home. Link was still dumbfounded. "There is no way a mere Hyrulian is that fast and strong." he thought to himself. "What is she?" "Hey Link." says Zelda, "Are you ok?" "I'll...." says Link, "I'll be fine. It's just that.... Who was your mother exactly? I have seen may things before. But your speed and reaction time are unreal. Was your mother even a Hyrulian?" "Honestly," says Zelda, as a sad look took over her face. "I'm not really sure myself. I know that a person should not normaly be this fast and strong. But, my father, he usualy dodges the subject. He's not telling me something." She takes a look at the locket around her neck. She pulls it off, opens it, and shows the picture inside to Link.
"This much I know." says Zelda, "This is all I have of my mother." "She's as beautiful as you are Zelda." says Link, "Listen, Zelda, when we get home......."
Just then, something explodes in front of Link and Zelda. As the smoke clears, three moblins dressed in riot gear can be seen. "What the...." says Zelda, "What the hell are those things?!?!?" "Link." says one of the moblins, "The time has come for you to die." "Not going to happen!" says Link. He reaches into his backpack, and pulls out his Master Sword. "Good thing that I was given this magic bag." Link thought to himself. The first moblin pulls out a tazer. He attempts to hit Link with it. Link dodges the attack, and strikes down the moblin with his sword. The moblin's body disolves back into shadows. The second moblin weilds duel nightsticks. Link manages to dodge the moblin's attacks, and then slays the foul beast. The third moblin tries to pull out a handgun. But, Zelda runs up and trips the moblin, allowing Link to deliver the final blow.
"What were those things Link?" says Zelda. "Moblins." says Link, "Servants of Ganon. Looks like he knows I'm back. Zelda, come on. Let's go home." Link and Zelda start walking home, but then, Zelda falls to the ground. "Dammit!" says Zelda, "I think I might have sprained my ankel." Link walks up to Zelda, and picks her up off the ground. She blushes for a second. "Wha.... what the hell are you doing?!?!?" she says, "Put me down!" "A sprained ankel is a sprained ankel." says Link, "I can't let you walk on that and risk further injuy." "But...." says Zelda, "Oh alright... Just make sure no one sees us, ok?"
As Link carries Zelda home, Zelda wondered what Link wanted to say to her before the Moblin attack. She tried to ask. But, as soon as she looked up at him, the words couldn't come out. She felt choked up inside when she looked at him. "Dammit," she thought to herself, "what's wrong with me?"
