i have noticed that i draw people with very lame hair. most of my characters have all the same hairstyles--long and straight, ringlet curls, or short, mostly with swoopy bangs. i took it upon myself to study hairstyles from the whole 20th century, and put together my own composite styles, in a way to create my own styles.

i fancy this to be a tutorial, because i've noticed a lot of people also tend to draw the same hairstyles. i did all of the faces in an anime style because i've noticed a lot of anime artists stick with the same hairstyles over and over.

Doctor Dolittle Says:

My mom had all of them from the 70's and up. And I have photographic proof.

This is really cool! It's kind of fun seeing how hair changes from decade to decade!

I try not to! D: but I don't know how bad I fail at this!

Tom of Forks Says:

I hadn't even really put too much thought into different hair styles like that. o:

You captured every era perfectly , especially the awful 90s .
This is inspiring to try out some new hairstyles on some of my characters. I've been stuck on side parts for too long .

^^ Awwww, I just love the hair of the 1900's, 1910's and 1930's. It's hard to go wrong with pretty curls like that. I've always had this strange, dreary feeling about the 20's, though. It felt like everyone was caught in something terribly grim, and I don't really mean the war. If the future had continued in that same state of mind, I wonder what we would be like today? It's a scary thought for me.

But back to the hair! They all look great, art-wise. I think it's really neat how you put together a collection like this, and you're right--a lot of people do use the same kinds of hair, probably me included. xD Let us move forward, towards a better designing future! (yay for soap boxes)

God, the way you do hair is just beautiful!

Misstress Bubbles Says:

they're all so awesome!!
i love the 1910's, 1930's, 1970's, and 1990's

engle Says:

I can't even begin to describe how awesome this is.

EtherealMog Says:

To be honest I never used to put much into hairstyles, as I used to use the same few but now I want to expand my knowledge. And this is just the piece for it!
I also think it's rather interesting how the eyes have changed for some of the decades, it creates a timely feeling about the piece as they feel like the women you are drawing. However I've always been fascinated with how you draw hair, the ringlets tutorial before was amazing (had rather forgotten about them ^^') and now this. It really gives me the feeling you try and give each character it's own soul and individuality.
I wonder what you would make of tomboyish hair though, hmm.
Lovely work on depicting the styles!
Keep at it!
