The Raven and I

The Raven and I

I awoke from my pleasant dream
To the cawing of a midnight raven
We exchanged glowers, each with a scheme
I wanted it out of my safe haven

“Spying on my dreams, you foul bird?”
I glared as I reached for a candle stand
It flapped its wings “that’s absurd!”
“I’m a simple crow; now hold out your hand”

I held out my hand, unsure why
“Don’t play tricks with me, I’ll scream!”
It jeered “I wouldn’t even try!”
“I can give you all that you dream”

“For you see, I’m not just a raven
I am the child of the Raven God
I really can see peoples’ dreams now and then
But I feel threatened by your candle rod.”

I put the candelabra on the floor
“Why should I trust you, demonic raven?”
He cawed “just see what I have in store”
Does this evil raven consider himself a maven?
We’ll just have to see

I held out my hand once more
Its eyes glinted in the jackal moon
And scratched my hand like an angry bore
It took flight, cawing its evil tune

“You’ll never be able to write again!”
The demon let out a cackle
“I knew you were a scripter!”
It sneered and flew off

The stupid bird lied!
I didn’t get all that and more!
I called back to him, quoting “Nevermore!”

The raven was always known as a trickster in many religions and cultures around the world. To the natives he was a trickster god, to the vikings he was the god of pranks and jokes. The Raven was also used in Edgar Allen Poe's the raven (which was a canny reference at the end) and I'm glad to say I took the time to read this. The raven was also known for being wise, but also for being greedy and a trickster, and this person did a wonderful job capturing its essence! Well done!

Heh, inspired by Edger Allen Poe I assume?

Smiling Devil Says:

I like this poem a lot, and I love the little twist at the end that the writer says: "nevermore" instead of the Raven.
The only stanza that throws me a bit off is the fifth stanza, but other then that: This deserves to be featured^^.

Ok, kind of late to comments now that its featured but...

Just because you can never write again doesn't mean you can't TYPE again!
