Jayli to Ash to Raydl
Evolution
Series of 4 (although 6 were intended), done for my drawing class in which we were asked to draw a series that introduced myself and/or described a transformative process. Naturally, I picked Jayli.
I wanted it to use a single figure, alone, to portray as much as I could both about myself and Jayli in a story-like manner, starting from a timid unwillingness to face the world, to a rather apprehensive and hostile approach, to more proaction and energetic force, to a movement towards freedom and harnessing inner potential.
As a sidenote, my biggest critique was that "it's too perfect, so I can't see your artistic intent and it doesn't interest me. You should have made her ugly. Also, fantasy is too generic, and she's far too sexy."
~20 hours. Graphite and kneadable eraser.

That's awesome.
I love this. >3

Very nicely done, your textures are superb as always! Though I can see why you intended on 6, it's a bit of a jump in the middle.

Wow, this seems to have a great, deep meaning. I love the way you drew the fur and the expressions, and that last pose is just completely amazing. The shines and shades are absolutely gorgeous, though she seems to be in pain.
Well, great job overall. This is beautiful!

"She's far too sexy"? "I can't see your artistic intent"? "You should have made her ugly"? WHAT???????
I'm no art teacher, and I certainly don't have any actual talent with this kind of work, but COME ON. That critique sounded a little silly.
Really, I thought the whole evolutiohn process was astounding, and the poses you had her in really added to it. One of the best things you've done, I think.

I'll be controversial here and say that I agree with that critique (except for the "make her ugly" comment). This picture does feel generic and plain with the animal morphing into a human form, especially with the lack of backgrounds. I know that they would distract from the intended meaning of the pictures, but without it these also can easily be taken as some more pin-up pictures. You have much better pictures in your gallery that take things up a notch over ordinary fantasy and realism.
I also do not understand the jump from the first to second picture. In the first one she is loose, relaxed and seems to be coming down to the ground. The 3rd and 4th picture also go down to the ground into a more compact form, yet the 2nd picture has her arms raised up in what looks like an action pose.
My personal interpretation is the opposite of what you say these mean. I see her as free and content in the first picture, with each one after becoming more and more civilized to the point where she is trapped within herself. In the last one, she is no longer able to tap into her wild side, and be free again.

I've heard thoses comment before about things that are "prefect" isn't artistic enough. I can't agree with thier verison of "what is true art". I think being artist has to do something with the soul. There are no restrictions, after it is you own world, you are just expressing in a certain way, such as drawing, music, poerty, stories, photograph, ect. There are hunderds upon hunderds of styles.
Pictures are childern born and raised from artist who spend hundreds of hours of dreaming, practicing, studying, and work years upon years. Saying that a certain style isn't art is the same thing as being racist. They consider that if a person is a certain race then they are worthless and they have no purpose and cannot call themselves human...
I became angry with that person. It wasn't pretty, considering it was my mom.
