Prologue.}}

Sayuri sat atop the slanted roof of her home in Kyoto, Japan. She ran in between her pale fingers the fragile old silk remnants of a once glorious kimono. She stared at it but not really seeing it- or rather, not seeing it as a whole. Her topaz eyes traced the different patterns in the fabric. The wind began to pick up, blowing against Sayuri’s back. There was the familiar sound of a bell ringing below the rooftops of Kyoto. It was the bell that Sayuri’s daughters had tied onto the birdhouse they made in the spring. Sayuri heard the back patio door slide open. She heard the gentle shuffling footsteps of one of her twin daughters, Karin.

“Mom?”

“What?” Sayuri responded quietly, still staring at the kimono.

“We have to go, if we are going to make the plane.” Karin said from below.

“Right. I’ll be there in a second.”

“..‘Kay.”

Sayuri let her feet slip from the tiles of her roof. The ground seem to zoom up faster and faster and suddenly stopped as Sayuri’s thin, small feet hit the ground. Tucked her kimono, was a map of California. Sayuri opened it up and found the city they were traveling to.

“Santa Carla, California. Here we come.” Sayuri muttered to herself.
