Done for LantairVlea on LiveJournal as a part of EquineExchange. This is her character, Compass. Usually vibrant and energetic, here she pauses to watch as the storm rolls in.
So, I thought I'd try something new. I figured some clouds couldn't be too time-consuming. Boy, was I wrong! The horse and grass were done fast, the sky took days! Anyways, roughly drawn from my own photo, which I'll get posted on my stock gallery pretty quick. Aye. I think I'm gonna have to put EquineExchange on hold til the new year, though. So depressing . . . Also, Compass is supposed to be a Morab. Does it look at all like I accomplished that? I'm not so good at the subtle differences between horse breeds. I just really don't see them, but then, I don't live with horses either.
Anyways, colored pencil as per usual. No watercolors in this one, this time. No reference for the horse, too! I'm pretty proud of that. Well, LantairVlea, I hope you like it!

Very cool...this has such a majestic feel to it, not just the elements, but a sense of power in the horse even though he's standing still.

Certain breeds are hard to differentiate between, but then again, so many breeds have also been crossbred. Like the Arabian and thoroughbreds, they have similar bloodlines.
Personally, I'm not too fond of the idea of "pure breeds" anyway. Mutts have almost always been the smarter and healthier ones. At least in dogs, I don't know how much of a chance horses get to become mutts since they can't exactly go roaming around the city. Maybe mustangs or fell ponies could be like that...
