Those Who Lurk in the Shadows Chp 1 - Creatures

Chapter One-Creatures

The boy darted around the corner, panting heavily as sweat dripped off his face. The buildings passed him like a blur, and his shadow followed. As he looked over his shoulder he noticed the dark figure he was running from.
This dark figure was larger than the average height of a human, and it ran on all fours. This thing had bright yellow eyes, and released an odour of rotting corpses.
The boy darted into an alley way and haulted as he reached a large wired fence about eight feet tall.

He stood under a dim light as he hesitated to make a move, for it was approaching him with great speed, he knew it was, just knew it. He could smell that odour.
He jumped and grabbed a hold of the wires and began to climb them with trouble. The wires dug into the palms of his hands causing them to open up.
He looked behind him to see the thing leap into the air, arms spread out infront, ready to grab him and force him off his pearch.

Claws dug into the boys thigh's puncturing the skin and bone.

A loud crack emitted from the broken bone and blood squirted from his freshly made wound painting the cold cement below.

The boy let out a blood curdling scream, tears ran down his face as the thing pulled down, causing the bone to crack down the middle.

The boy let go of his only hope, and fell to the hard cement, cracking his skull open.
He was knocked unconsciousness, and the thing let out a victory cry which sounded like a lions roar, and began to feast on his victim.

As the sun broke the darkness, life returned to the city, the streets filled with the sounds of traffic and the short conversations between pedestrians.

On fifty-fourth street two teens walked down the road and turned into an alley.
One was named Stephen O'Shields, he was five foot ten, short blonde hair, a pretty face, sky blue eyes, and wore a red long sleeved shirt, and a pair of blue jeans.

The other went by the name of Carl Johanson, he was six foot one, shoulder length brown hair, a thin face, brown eyes, and wore a jean jacket, white shirt and blue jeans.
They stopped and plugged their noses "What is that stench!?" Stephen said waving his hand infront of his face.

Carl shrugged "Why don't we go see for our selves man?"

As they moved onward, not knowing what they were about to see, they were stopped by two police man "There is no admitance beyond this point boys. I will have to ask you to leave." "What happened here officer?" The officer glanced at Carl and gave him a "You don't want to know" look. "Just another robbery."

Carl and Stephen looked at eachother and knew that there just had to be something else that went down in this area. "Well we'll be of officer."

The officer tipped his hat to them and turned around. "And oh ya, be careful out there you to, it can get pretty nasty when night comes." Stephen raised his brow and looked at the officer "Thanks for the recomendation officer."

As they continued their way down Fifty-Fourth street, Stephen stopped by a hot dog stand and bought one frank and a nice chilled coke.

They went over to city hall, and sat on the steps as Stephen ate his hot dog, and drained his coke. "It is just strange that the officer would be so protective about a robbery." "It sure is." Stephen replied with a moutful of processed meat.

He took a sip of his drink to moisten the food, and swallowed it.

He studied the sky than looked down at the ground "What ever happened we will find out won't we?"

Carl grined at this knowing what kind of person Stephen was. Stephen was always the one to take stupid risks just to figure something stupid out. Just like this case scenario.
Carl was the guy who kept to himself, and left it that way, but usualy did what his buddy would want to do.

"And how would you be doing that?" Even though he already knew the answer, it was always like him to pop the question "We go there tonight, see what actually happened, and hopefully figure out why the cops are so protective of that one area." Stephen directed his attention to the police cruisers that were forever patrolling fifty-fourth, fifty-fifth, and fifty-sixth street.

"Well it is kind of weird that the police are attacking this situation this way...but it doesn't mean we have to go on another goose hunt."

He scarfed down the rest of his hot dog and got up. "Why it's no goose hunt, cause there is no goose."

He began to scale down the steps than stopped as Carl said "It's always like you to crack the mysteries of this city!"

He lowered his head, tears ran down his face, and he quietly said "Mysteries they are?" He wipped his face with his sleeve and gazed up at the sky "I am like this because of my father." Carl raised one eyebrow in confusion "But your father left your mother when you were ten."

He shook his head wearily "I made that story up to cover up my real one..."
Carl began to scale down the stairs towards Stephen "What are you trying to tell me Stephen!?"

He hestitated for a long time, fists clenched, tears running down his face, and he told Carl in a choked voice "My father was murdered by a beast of darkness. I was there when he was brutally slaughtered...

"You guys wait here, I will see what that loud racket was."
Father walked through the darkness, arms out front, searching for the door handle and the table. He placed his right hand on the table and his left on the door knob.
He grasped a hold of the flashlight and turned it on just as he opened the door.
A faint, low breathing sound could be heard. It was followed by what sounded like water droplets.

The room filled up with the foul odour of corpses as father opened the door.
The breathing became heavier, and there was footsteps in the hallway.

I could only see tiny pieces of the hall, but the thing that caught my eye was that beast.

It was a cross between a Wolverine and a Grizzly. But the thing was, it had no fur, only flesh, rotting flesh. Its teeth were serrated and portruded from its jaws.
The eyes of the beast were bright yellow in the dark, but when my father shone the light at it, its eyes became blood red.

The beast extended its arms and opened its claws and with a feirce leap it forced my father into the wall, knocking down picture frames and dust from the ceiling.

My father let out a cry as the beast drove its claws into his shoulder, I could distinctively remember the sound of his bones cracking.

My father was drove through the wall and brought back foward to be impaled with another feirce jab into the shoulder.

Blood splattered onto the flashlight, causing a blanket of red light to coat the wall.
He fell to the floor and the beast ripped opened his rib cage and tore out his heart with one feirce yank. The valves spewed blood onto the walls.

It feasted on his heart, blood dripping down the side of its face.

The next thing I remember is when it feasted on my fathers thigh bone, I remember the grinding noises as it tore away at bone and flesh, swallowing it whole.

My mother grabbed a hold of my arm and told me that we were going to escape down the fire hatch.

I started to cry as the beast made a meal out of my father, but followed my mom down the fire escape. The last thing I rembered was the hollar of the beast...It was like the hollar of a Banshee.
