Love Letter, Prolouge: Cold Day In July (The Dream)
Cold Day In July (The Dream)
At that point things didn't seemed like they'd change.
Konoha had always been bright and gentle. Warm and comforting.
A home she'd never thought she would have...
The moon is full and my arms are empty
All night long I've pleaded and cried
She hated the words on the paper. Never ever in her entire life had she hated anything so much, the ink made no sense. She was happy. She was fine. She was grateful. But-
Your bags are packed not a word is spoken
I guess we said everything with good-bye
Still they spilled out onto the paper. Sensitivity was a thing with her, it really always had been. More then usual. But as the words continued to spill out she began to wonder if they were really her own-
Time moves so slow and promises get broken
The rain outside pounded the walls, the ceiling as once again she had been left to her own actions. To herself, and leaning over that paper, with the sound of the pages and scrawling beside her of the one other person in the room distracted her, and only added to the aggravation.
Sun's comin' up comin' up down on Main Street
"He'll be back soon..." the voice is unwavering but nervous, slightly edgy. As if concerned for her feelings. The thoughts could of been read off the paper or maybe it was just the frown on her face.
"I'm sure he will..." she responded, tapping the end of the pencil boredly to the desk. The other shuffled awkwardly on the chair beside them, it was customary to have some form of company here. The classroom was plain and boring, empty yeah but still rather comforting. She could hear the noises through the door. The noises of someone and all of her friends. They were talking about something. Something she was not quite sure she had heard of it yet, or maybe something she had but wasn't allowed to hear of. They were whispering but loud enough for her to hear.
Children shout as they're running out to play
Head in my hands
As time finally ticked out the last hour, no speaking came between them and finally, finally she looked up to the door as it slid open. There he was, standing, handsome, goofy, lanky, blonde. Naruto Uzumaki.
"Wow." CJ poked her head into the room, "Everyones really stoked about later!"
"Ssssh!" hissed Allison to CJ, rolling her eyes. They were holding hands.
"Enough." Neji grumbled walking by, bored obviously with the conversation.
"Ready to go?" Naruto grinned playfully at Cashel who pushed herself up from the seat, but upon noticing the weird movement beside her, Hinata had moved too. Both stuffed away thier work and Hinata smiled at Naruto for a few minutes before he spoke simply to her. "I'll see you out in a second." Hinata nodded and Cashel frowned in mixed confusion.
"We need to talk." Naruto said, his fingers clenched and unclenched. But his eyes stayed the same blue, gentle but slightly shook with something else.
"Oh, okay." Cashel said, shrugging. Marching up to the board she randomly began to sign a "C+N" within a heart on the board. Naruto sighed and stopped her, by grasping her hand and shaking his head. "What? What's going on?"
Naruto bit his bottom lip and seemed to think this through. "We can't-I mean. I was talking to Sasuke. And-"
"What did you guys talk about?" Cashel said conversationally. She couldn't help but admire him, his babyish face, bright eyes, loving smile-that was now a frown.
"We talked about...a lot of things." he muttered, not one for liking uncomfortable silences and when Cashel just stared at him for not continuing he spoke again, "We talked about us."
"Us?" Cashel repeated, "You talked about your friendship with Sasuke with Sasuke?"
"No!" Naruto laughed, and it was one of the most beautiful things Cashel had ever heard, like bell chimes in her mind. "No! We would never! We talked about you and me."
Cashel stopped and once more looked at Naruto in surprise. "You and Sasuke had a serious conversation about who your dating?" Naruto stuttered for a second and looked away. "What?"
Naruto took a deep breath and muttered something.
"What? Sorry didn't catch that?" Cashel eyed him curiously, why was he acting so weird?
Naruto replied, his voice husky and uneven but he stared straight at her now, hands on either side of her face. "We can't be together anymore." Cashel was still in shock that he'd been able to look so deeply into her eyes and say that, while holding her blushing burning cheeks, to her face.
"W-what?"
"We can't be together anymore." he repeated. This time he still held onto her but by the shoulders, his eyes spoke things the words had not. It's for your own good. I promise. You'll be happier.
"Excuse me?" Cashel recaught herself, feeling aggravation at such a joke rising inside her. He just stared at her and the joke died away, bile rose now. She tried to pull away feeling like she was going to puke up her lunch. Naruto held onto her shoulders, looking down at her.
"You can't be with me anymore, understand?"
"no..." the words came out a squeak and not the shout she'd wanted them to be. Shaking her head and backing away, Naruto only held onto her shoulders tighter.
"Understand? Please don't be mad. I knew you'd get like this. Please! Please!"
"NO!" Cashel found her voice. "FUCK! NO! I DON'T UNDERSTAND! WHY?" a giant piece of her side felt like he was being ripped out, she hissed and recoiled, pushing Naruto's strong brace on her arm's away. Gripping at the side of her chest now, wanting to shout in pain. "Don't you dare..."
"I'm sorry." He repeated and it was obvious he meant it, his blue eyes sparkled with unshed tears he tried to push them away as Cashel glared back at him.
"Tell. Me. Why." she ordered through gritted teeth.
Naruto growled low in his throat before speaking, "Because it's better for you."
"How. Fucking. So." No question, Cashel did not believe this in the least.
"It hurts you."
"Well duh, it hurts me! You're breaking up with me-"
"No." Naruto shook his head. "I could hurt you."
"YOU ARE NOW DUMBASS!" Naruto sighed as Cashel glowered at him. "What on earth did Sasuke say to you? TELL ME."
Naruto just shook his head. "He wasn't the only one. I'm right, here. We gave it a good run. And everything. But it's obvious."
"What is?" Cashel hissed. "Because obviously I can't see it!"
Naruto watched Cashel twitch with anger, shaking himself from fear, but since he was the man in the relationship he seemed to think he had to hold his ground somehow. "It's just, your not happy."
"I'm not happy." Cashel repeated surprised, straightening up as she glared at him.
"Yes." he repeated. Cashel stared eyes wide as he took a strand of her hair and flexed it, Cashel's fingers clamped against her side, the burning of the hole there...something was eating her away she wanted to fall over to find someway of stopping the pain. "You can't be alone like this. You need someone better."
"I'll hate you if you do this." Cashel glowered, threats, it had come down to threatening.
"I'm sorry and I know." he admitted, Cashel saw him turn to the door.
"And you can just live with that, can you?" she snarled.
"Yes." he lied.
"Fuck you." Cashel growled, the sound would have been stronger if she wasn't falling apart at the seems. Her legs were buckling and that pain, that hole now erupting in her insides, eating away and melting the flesh. He shrugged and turned away.
"I don't need you anymore." Cashel froze and slowly fell to the ground, her words were caught in her throat and the only thing that worked were her legs it seemed because they pushed her forward as he walked away. Moving toward him, grabbing his shirt's back.
"What did you say?"
"I don't need you anymore." he repeated but refused to look at her.
Cashel had one thought and then a whisper before falling to the ground as he walked to the door-
You were the one to save me.
"Who?" of course what she meant was answered as the door opened and there she stood.
"I-I-I-i'm sorry." squeaked Hinata, her fingers interlaced as her eyes shook clearly she'd been listening to whole exchange.
"Oh." said Cashel feeling the hole in her side grow, wincing and whimpering at the pain. Naruto fidgeted but did nothing but continue his walk to the door. "I see now..."
"And?" the question soon followed, Hinata watched with endearing eyes. "And do you hate me too?" she whispered weakly.
More then you know. "No. Never." Hinata watched for a long time and then spoke again, her voice so sickly sweet it made Cashel writhe.
"I don't hate you. I really don't...I know it's hard. But maybe- after awhile...We can be friends. Maybe?" Naruto had stood beside her and didn't look at the mass that was now Cashel Elaine Lisse.
"Yeah...Hopefully you can gain my trust again." Cashel answered as Hinata nodded.
"Bye." she said and Naruto had already said his goodbye, a curt nod as he walked off with her.
Sitting thier on the floor Cashel pulled herself together, or rather tried. Pain. Lots of friggen pain. It was all on the inside too. Just that stupid goddamn wound on her side.
"Cashel!" shouted Jenna racing into the room. Helping her friend up, CJ and Allison soon followed. "You okay?" Cashel nodded and winced at the pain still in her side as she rubbed at it with her hand. They were cold. Just like the blood had been sucked out of them and was now focused on the injury in her side. "Maybe we should have told you..."
"You sure?" asked CJ. Cashel just smiled and nodded.
"We're going away..." Jenna admitted as they walked with her, home.
"Oh?" Cashel asked innocently. Jenna nodded. "Where?" as much strength as it took to stand up she felt like falling right back over.
Jenna smiled meakly and slight embarrassment of a blush tinted her cheeks. "Well, with Lexi." she admitted.
"Aw, sounds good." Cashel hated herself for feeling something squirm in her. The same thing happened but stronger when she saw CJ and Allison. Both smiling fondly at each other enjoying the others company. The happiness, the love there. It hurt like a burn to the giant gash in her side. She knew it would pass, right. Things passed.
"Well. Time to go." the others smiled at her but as they headed home, Cashel noticed them all still looking at her.
"What?"
"You sure your okay?"
"Yeah! Fine! Really! Um, one thing. Why are you guys all dressed up?" Cashel frowned.
"The party remember?" Jenna smiled and Cashel frowned.
Time seemed to have fast forwarded itself. They stood outside of the green grassed open training grounds. White veils hung from pedestals and sakura blossoms sparkled upon the wind, people laughed and joked and gossiped. This was a happy occasion.
"A Party?" Cashel repeated.
"The wedding, silly." Jenna rolled her eyes. "You space out so easily."
"Oh." Cashel repeated, and they both turned to the center the lovey dovey music had stopped and the two. A bride and a man in a tuxedo stood side by side, rings now placed delicatly on thier fingers, staring into each other's eyes for eternity.
You said that we were gonna last forever
You said our love would never die
-Before knowing it she'd begun writing on the napkin. Everyone was speaking, presently Neji stood at the top of the staircase speaking some good words for the bride. Next Jenna was called up and she spoke like him of how happy the couple would obviously be...The time flickered by until-
"Where his Ex! CASHEL! GET UP HERE! WE NEED YOU TO GIVE HIM A HARD TIME!" Kiba called her up to the stand. Cashel winced and quickly put up her hands trying not to grip her side where the pain still shot through her at the word, "Ex".
"Oh! No!" Cashel repeated. "I couldn't! I haven't prepared anything." quickly shoving the napkin away.
"No, I insist!" Hinata squeaked out, looking as bright as she beamed at her.
"No. No. I really couldn't."
Naruto stood up and pointed at Cashel, it was the first time he'd looked at her since then. He looked so nice in that tux...but..."no one expects you to be funny, Cashel. Just, give it a shot." Jenna gave her a small nod and CJ and Allison applauded her up to the front. Thier she stood in front of the stand.
And unlike many dreams, as she had the spotlight on her and everyone watched smiling, she did not suddenly lose her clothes and everyone break into hysterics. No, it was way worse. Everyone watched intent for it to be good. What Cashel said.
"Well...um, I don't really no what to say." Cashel's reflex was to grab her side but fought it off. Even though the ache was close to unbearable.
"Well, for starters." began Kiba. "Sorry about losing this guy?" he pointed to Naruto. Cashel fought off the urge to cry out at the pain.
"Oh, hell no." Cashel spoke to quickly, people chuckled and Naruto stared in awe at her. "I mean, sorry, I didn't mean it like that. I meant just that he isn't my kind of guy. I mean." she looked at him for a long minute and smiled, "Talk about having a kid for a lover." Another round of chuckles. "I'll give him credit though." Cashel smiled, something she was good at. "He gave me a present one christmas." she smiled at him, winking once, "And it only took me one week to get rid of it." More laughter. "I do have to remember something though..." Cashel took a deep breath and watched Hinata and Naruto stay close to one another, hands entwine. She was happy for them, she really was. and the pain in her side silenced for a quarter of 2 minutes only to continue...
"You used to always say...
That the day you would leave me, would be a cold day in July. Has he said that you Hinata?" she shook her head, but watched me intently as did everyone awaiting my words. Naruto just watched me eyes sparking.
"Well you would say the day you would leave me would be a cold day in July."
"Pretty damn poetic, eh?" Sasuke shouted from where he sat in the crowd, Cashel nodded and looked back at both of them.
"As poetic as he ever got." she smiled kindly, everyone was still watching but Cashel could see them together, thier kids, thier good times, thier bad. They'd be together forever. And when she looked up Jenna and CJ and Allison were waving frantically at her. They needed to leave.
"Did you have a point?" Naruto asked, he was watching her and she knew this would be one of the last times she'd have his full attention. Correction, the last time.
"No. I didn't." she stepped away from the podium and wished them both a happy life, turning to face her own, and the now empty table where her friends had sat, she walked past it, the others were to into the wedding and Cashel could careless if anyone noticed. She was no longer sour. But getting out was important. Somewhere far away. For now at least even if it was just her, alone.
Jenna called as Cashel boarded the quickest flight out, packing her stuff had been easy. "Your okay?
"Yeah. I'm just going on vacation."
"Why not stay here with me and Lexi?"
"No." Cashel ordered. Jenna was silent for a second. "It's nothing personal. I just can't Jen...You know it hurts. And it's not yours or Lexi's faults. It just hurts. A lot. you understand, don't you?" Jenna seemed to and told her to be safe.
"The weather is nice though." Jenna said, smiling lightly into the phone.
"Yeah." came the crackle back in the phone, Cashel seemed to be boarding the plane and looked once back where the white veils and sakura blossoms could still be seen floating through the air.
"Here comes that cold day in July."
