On Summer's Dying Breath

The days of summer have come to pass,
And lazy evenings: lantern-lit, to exist
By the grace of idle conversation alone.
The once-mighty heat takes its last swings
At the earth, consumed by growing cold.
Birds have taken to the skies, driven by
The brash and violent western winds
Which charge through sunset's dying glow.
Winter looms, a silent menace far upon the shore
Summer lays down amongst the flowers
Fear not: a new life has come to be.

My dad's 53rd birthday is today, August 31st, the last day of the "summer months". This was my present to him, happy birthday, Dad.
This, you may notice, is free verse, not my typical rhyming style. This is mostly because my younger sister, aged ten, told me to write something different.
"God," she said "Didn't anyone ever tell you that poems don't have to rhyme?"
"But... That's what I'm good at."
"Dad doesn't want a boring, rhyming poem for his birthday!"
"Chances are, he doesn't want another bloody picture of a CAT, EITHER!"

Tears occurred.
And, in short, I lost the battle.
Please enjoy this non-rhyming poem.

This /is/ different than your normal style, but I love it nonetheless. ^-^ I usually hate free verse, most people who attempt it don't create a steady flow, and yet you seem to have pulled it off nicely. I do hope your dad likes it.

Victraelle Says:

If I was your dad, I'd be honored.
(but if I were your dad...he'd be a woman...*blinks*)

Skid tansten Says:

Beautiful! I, too, would've written something today (My grandmother's birthday as well), but I could not find the words.
This is brilliant, in any case.

Smiling Devil Says:

Aww, you shouldn't be so mean to your little sister.

And this poem is very beautifull^^.

this is lovely.

Ah, 10-year olds: smarter than everyone in the whole world.

You can get back at her by telling her to talk to people at a place called '4chan'...they'll think she's GREAT!
