Preface

Pain. Pain was all I could feel. It radiated throughout my whole body, it penetrated every fiber of my being. I knew in the small corner of my mind that was still sane that Cassie and Spike were also in pain, but I didn’t care at this moment. For a brief moment it felt as if all of my limbs were being pulled from my body, like my soul was being ripped in half. Then everything went numb.

In the distance I could hear one of the servants screaming for help, in my mind I saw Cassie sprinting towards the main hall. But once again, I didn’t care, I couldn’t care. My heart wasn’t here; my mind wasn’t here, not anymore. I felt Cassie grab me as I tried to run, I saw Spike shoving people out of the room as it got darker and darker. I remember collapsing into Cassie’s arms as I struggled against her. I remember screaming, and lashing, and I remember shifting into my jester form, wings and all.

But the thing I remember is suddenly feeling dead, and screaming one name, and one name only. It shattered the windows in the room, and the lights went completely out as is escaped my lips. Jackle, the man who right now had my whole being in his cold dead hands, Jackle the only thing that I could say. Then I blacked out.
