Fairy Tale Part 12
The sun’s rays assaulted his eyes swiftly as if to announce rudely that the day had begun and he’d best be awake. He grumbled quietly trying to shake off the grogginess and sudden lurch in his stomach. He took a deep breath to calm himself before whatever remained in his stomach surfaced to the rock he lay upon. He blinked a few times as the sunlight’s sudden intrusion became less glaring. He stretched half-heartedly, if only to work out of most of the kinks he felt.
He yawned for a moment, his gaze meeting a deep golden sunrise. The shining disc of the sun sat on its perch high above the mountains as if to watch them, ensure that he never came near that area of the world again.
He sighed for a moment before he twitched his head, the ground shook again as it had the night before.
‘What the devil?’ he thought to himself, moving his head away from the sunrise as he saw a new form near him. Its eyes flashed an odd blue that shimmered like moonlight, its tail flicked back and forth with a quick motion while it studied him.
The large beast seemed to be a cross between an extraordinarily large horse and an alligator. The peculiar creature made a light sound that he’d never heard. Its body language seemed to convey less than hostility, more of a playful nature. Aloric watched it with a curious eye, the previous events of his life almost vanishing as he looked almost hypnotically at this creature.
‘Dear gods what’s come over me?’ he asked himself, trying to steer his eyes away from those pulsing blue eyes, so innocent and playful, yet a creature with so many sharp fangs had them. His eyes watered furiously as he had not blinked, he attempted to…yet he wanted to continue to look at the creature, he needed to gaze at its eyes.
His face became a scowl as his body seemed to contort slightly from the uncomfortable position it had been forced into for how long Aloric knew not, yet for now he did not care. His mind now focused on those blue eyes, those cloudy azure spheres. He stared, the warmth of the sun now against him as he had not moved, the beast almost seemed to be grinning at him, it seemed to be encouraging him to look on.
Its maw opened a little more with every second of his continued stare, its teeth seemed ever sharper than they had moments before. His eyes gazed at those pools of blue for a long moment and he realized he was staring potential death in the face. Yet as he readied for the creature to lunge at him, a quick pain at his backside seemed to tear away at him like fire, his eyes shut swiftly as he fell to the ground, a sudden gasp escaping from his throat.
The creature made a quick growl while Aloric listened, he felt no jaws clamp against him or tear at him, yet the pain on his back still burned at him. Another quick roar came, louder this time, followed by a swift scream that lasted merely a second and it was gone. With his eyes finally rested for him to open them, Aloric did then immediately shut them.
The creature was huddled over what looked to be a robed figure in maroon and white, though he could not tell if the maroon were the color of the figure’s blood or fabric. The beast turned to him again and nodded slightly, causing confusion in the young man. Confusion and a lack of appetite were the two most prevalent ideas in his head, as the attacker had very little of his body left. The creature was deadly, yes, but for now, it did not seem to wish him harm.
