A friend pointed out a discussion in the Spriter's Zone Club where a certain individual made some very narrow-minded critical comments about the spriting community, sprite editing, and sprite comics. Me, well,... mixing arrogance and ignorance is a recipe that I don't like to let cook. Part of being the oldest son of two professional educators, I guess.

At any rate, this is my personal retort against the mere suggestion that (A) anything sprited that isn't 100% custom is a recolor, (B) that recolors are nothing but undeserving crap, and (C) that sprite comics do not deserve to exist, period. Those three statements are the claims of this individual as reported by the Spriter's Zone Club. I also took the time to do some research into this individual's own statements, and felt strongly compelled to point out the painful flaw in his "suggestion" to spriters (see above comic).

Oh, and by the way Mr. Anti-Spriter, you mentioned you were "up ofr a challenge"? I've got a challenge, if you think you're up for it. How about facing off with a "recolor" like me in a writer's battle? If you're interested I'll tell you more about it.

dakan Says:

oh...so you are protesting cause the recolor is not fair? well yeah, some guys cant draw as you say,but i hope "those guys" better have to learn how to do a "real" sprite..

Night fox27 Says:

I recolor sprites because thats the best I can do, but later on i'll learn how to make sprites...good job by the way.

Mr OMA Says:

You think that's bad? I've seen some instances where people claim death to sprite material JUST BECAUSE it's sprite material.

Sprites are tough in their own right, too. You see my recent TFS and AS comics? With various different customs? You know how long it took to make the Ohma sheet?

Bashing for the sake of bashing.

Solar Zero Says:

...YOU ARE SO FREAKING RIGHT! Sprite work here is really stepped on at Sheezy, and its lame that they do that. Sure you get the lazy ones that put no time or effort into it, but some do work hard at it. Recolors, almost everyone that ever started a sprite started out as one. I'm still considered one and so are you I'm sure. So what? It changes as we gain skill or want a new look, not like were fixed things.

On the comic, I love your poses and the ending was really great.

mr1 Says:

ahh this is the kinda thing I like to see.

Cube Melon Says:

Well... it's completely justified to call creating your own pixel art "drawing". I'm pretty sure that's what he meant there. Considering directly before that he was talking about making your own sprites.

Halkel da Thunderhog Says:

I learnt alot from this, People do find it hard to draw, Everyone starts somewhere so most of them would get a design and attempt to create a character using a made sprite for a base. Dissing a person because of their low skill level or because they made it from an official sprite is not going to help them improve but will turn them off the subject. I've seen someone actually disgraced themself because they were dissed for editing work yet i see alot of GOOD comments on true recolours. Sounds messed up.

Jetstreamx Says:

Dude, you are awesome.

Ongaru Says:

The anti-sprite thing pisses me off too. I used to have a HUGE sprite sheet up on DA. Tons of sprites of my character, custom-edited, and each one took at least an hour to do--They deleted it because it was "plagiarized." Bullshit. What I didn't totally re-draw, was recolored--only a few traces of the original sprite were left, and the only reason I used Sonic sprites in the first place was to make sure the sizes and proportions were all right. But no, that's not original enough. 9_9
